You don't have to be a scholar with a film like this to know what it will be about and how the story will develop. Even if it's kind of a docudrama, you just know that a lot of people are going to die on the climb.

Since the film therefore does not have to rely on originality, there are other factors that are decisive for a rating.

In a film like this, the images of nature and Mount Everest are of great importance. These look really beautiful, you can feel the cold through the screen, as it were. Strongly portrayed.

I found the story itself a bit messy. It's very difficult to see who is actually who, and those thick suits don't really help with that either. In addition, there are many characters in the film, which is also not really conducive.

The cast was okay, few real outliers. A role like Gyllenhaal was completely unnecessary in my opinion. You follow too many characters to really bond with one of the characters.

Although the film is beautifully portrayed, it certainly has its flaws. Still, I had a good time and a sufficient amount is in order.

Reported

In 2014 I climbed the Pico Veleta. The Pico Veleta is a 3,396 meter high mountain in the province of Granada. The summit is, after Mulhacén, the highest point in the Sierra Nevada and the fourth highest mountain in Spain. I can still remember that I was completely exhausted at the end of the day. The comrade I walked with that day was in a much worse condition. He finished the section with quite a sunstroke. And to think that we hadn't even started at the bottom of the mountain yet.

Compared to Mount Everest, the height of Pico Veleta is rather insignificant. The world's tallest mountain reaches a dizzying height of 8,849 meters, with the climb to the top becoming increasingly commercialized. Bucket list material? Anyone considering making this climb should see 2015 Everest in preparation. A film that shows that returning alive from the mountain that the Nepalese refer to as the Chomolungma, or the 'mother goddess of the earth, is by no means self-evident. Especially not when you ignore warnings about a major storm.

The movie doesn't always work that well. Despite the mostly beautiful visuals, I never got the feeling that the cast members were really in the infamous zone of death at 8000 meters. And despite the running time, I found it difficult to bond with the characters because they generally remain very superficial. This makes Everest look away "easily", but less emotionally affected. The fact that a number of star actors play along does not change this much. However, the photos of the real victims do come in at the end, making the film stick.
