Trier does it again with this beautiful, moving film. A gem that doesn't seem to stand out at first glance, but gradually gets under your skin. With strong acting and a story that takes its time. I'm glad these kinds of films are still being made amidst Hollywood poverty, clinging to the familiar instead of creating new things. Even Fanning, who at first seems like an odd duck in the cast, shows considerable depth to her character. Trier doesn't fall for clichés, even if they're just around the corner.

I found the highly acclaimed Verdens Verste Menneske (The Worst Person in the World) (2021) a very dull film, so I had little faith in Trier's latest, but the critics were very positive again, so I had to give it a chance. Unfortunately, this latest film is also very dull: the pace is excruciatingly slow—which is why it's so long—and essentially nothing of note happens. We learn that the father, who is a director, wants to make a film about his mother with his daughter, an actress, in the lead role, but she wants nothing to do with him because she suffers from an "absent father" trauma. But when she finally reads the script, she does a 180-degree turn and plays the role after all, and everyone is happy. Now, I felt like the film gave away the ending right away because we're watching a film about the daughter in which the daughter essentially plays herself, but I think the postmodern confusion is more intended on a psychological level between father and daughter: he's looking for his daughter, with his mother standing in for him, and an American actress having to replace her, and she's looking for his love, which she finds in his work, the very thing he alienated her from. It raises questions like whether she's only authentic when she's acting (because only then does she express her emotions) and whether art is more real than reality (because art first expresses that reality and thus makes it real). The film's concept may be quite good, but the execution is a torture because watching paint dry is even more exciting. Like The Worst Person in the World, I think it's a film that could appeal more to women.

This little masterpiece is the film of the year for me. What a wonderful, sad family drama, with a fantastic Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsgård in the best performance of his life. He has seven acting children, but I still think he's the greatest talent.

It's that time of year when many families gather, and there are countless families dealing with a tragedy, or where tensions, both minor and major, are constantly present. Family is often a very difficult subject.

It was sometimes quite difficult to watch this beautiful film, because I recognized quite a bit. The father in this film seems indifferent to his two daughters, but you also have to consider how he grew up; it's not always so black and white!

Sometimes you only really get to know your father after his death, by hearing stories from his childhood and how he grew up, and then you understand him better...from your own experience
