A film by Isabel Coixet that has unjustly remained under the radar. Elisa y Marcela is an authentic love drama, stylishly told and shot. With also beautiful music, including organ tones. The final shot is beautiful, really beautiful. I don't understand why the credits want to make a statement about same-sex marriage, this film doesn't need that at all.

I have not (yet) seen all of Isabel Coixet's films, but I have generally enjoyed what I have seen. That certainly also applies to this warm film about a lesbian couple who, at the beginning of the last century, played a trick to defy social norms and values. A brilliant idea, although the “disguise” of Elisa leaves something to be desired visually.

Natalia de Molina and especially Greta Fernández deliver first class acting. In addition, the serene cinematography in beautiful black and white gives the film an authentic cachet. A beautiful drama with a gripping story and an impressive conclusion. Very nice.

A film somewhat reminiscent of El Baile De Los 41, a Mexican film set at about the same time and also depicting the difficulties of homosexuality at the time, but it deals with male homosexuality rather than women and the situation is Mexico instead of Spain. Another similarity is that both films are visually beautiful, even though this film is in black and white. In any case, the images are very tasteful, only the editing where we sometimes see a pigeon hole was cheesy and that costs the film half a star. The plot is a bit slow, but interesting. In the end, what makes El Baile De Los 41 the better film is that it strongly portrays emotions without using words. Elisa y Marcela knows less how to appeal to the emotions. Nevertheless worth it. 3.5*.
