Good film consisting of a collection of nine animated shorts, all set within the universe of the Matrix. All nine segments have their own story and their own animation style, which makes it easy to look away. Visually it can certainly be called beautiful and although it fits well with the Matrix, I still prefer to see the films.

Nice review.

I wasn't a huge fan of this omnibus before, but I've made it a bit easier this time. For a while I've abandoned the principle of always watching the original dub, specifically for Japanese animation made with American money. It just disturbs and takes away too much from the overall experience.

Only with Final Flight of the Osiris does the Japanese dub sound a bit strange, otherwise it is really a relief, which means that most shorts also come into their own much better. It also helps that the heavier, more serious styles that are used here are not often found within the current anime range, makes a revision just a bit nicer.

Chung's short remains by far the worst, Osiris starts well but ends very mediocre, otherwise everything is of sufficient quality to downright brilliant. Enjoyed it very much, with Beyond still the absolute standout, but World Record as the new favorite behind it.

Nice anthology.

The Animatrix was a movie that I've had my eye on for a long time, but it didn't really happen. However, as a fan of the source material, this is one anime movie that I can't really pass up. Although I expected the result to be disappointing, it turned out to be a very competent piece of animation.

I especially liked the first three pieces. It also helps that two of them connect directly to each other. Gradually we got to see all kinds of films, all with their own stylization, but also with a content that, as far as I'm concerned, can't match the first three pieces. It is therefore mainly those parts that draw the film over the line in its entirety for me.

What I especially constantly felt is that this movie isn't quite thought out as a whole. I had already expected that no part fits together with the exception of "The Second Renaissance", but as a whole the film felt very much like a few makers doing their own thing with the source material that they are presented with. Not every bit feels justified, and for a film that literally has to connect to the source material, I think that's a bad thing.

Furthermore, not every part is equally fascinating, some parts completely passed me by, but on the other hand, there is a film that manages to keep fairly the same level. Some pieces are a bit more violent (remarkably bloody even) while other pieces disappear more into science fiction and technology.

All in all, I had a pretty good time with this anime movie. There aren't that many that suit me, but that's why it helps that I watched the English dub and the film can consistently keep the same flow. Perhaps not something for every enthusiast that he or she is waiting for, otherwise fun entertainment that does not rattle on for too long.
