"Neo-Tokyo is about to E·X·P·L·O·D·E"
Kaneda (Iwata) is the leader of a motorcycle gang in Neo-Tokyo. Tetsuo (Sasaki) is one of the gang members and has always been the benjamin, who is under Kaneda's protection. When Tetsuo is arrested, he is used as a guinea pig for a military experiment, giving him incredible powers. Tetsuo can't control his powers and goes completely crazy. Kaneda is the only one who can stop him.

My first anime.
Didn't have a wow-feeling like some others, but in the end it wasn't too bad for me.
Especially the beginning looks nice, nice action scenes (those bikes 
). Towards the end it all gets a bit vague and the story almost takes on apocalyptic forms. I thought it was all a bit exaggerated. Doesn't take away from the fact that it looked very strong visually. Downside was the music, I didn't like it.

Renowned cult film. I don't feel old easily watching animations, and I can really enjoy a Ghibli or a Disney, but for this one I felt way too old. Lots of mopeds, lots of explosions, lots of violence, and sometimes even bare breasts!! The ideal cartoon for tough 13-year-old boys, but unfortunately not for me. 1,5*

I think this was the first Japanese animated film I saw at the time. Vague and confusing, and I wasn't immediately a fan of the movie. I think that was due to the age, because now that I've seen it again I can place everything a lot better. Akira is still a film that you don't have to completely dissect, and I especially enjoyed the animation and the imagination and inspiration of the makers. I've just let it all come to me, and that's probably the best way to view Akira.
