Sweet and bumbling sixteen-year-old Ruby Gillman tries desperately to fit in at Oceanside High, but most of the time she feels invisible. She is madly in love with a skater whom she tutors in math, but he only admires her math skills. And Ruby can't go to the beach with the cool kids either, because her overprotective supermom has forbidden her to go into the water. When she does, Ruby discovers that she is a descendant of a long line of kraken queens and warriors. Entertaining cartoon. The story is pretty standard and far from original. The implementation is quite successful. The pace is pretty high. The build up is good and soon the adventure begins. The film has the necessary humor, but also enough action. Visually everything looks good. Good for both young and old. 3.0

Luca meets The Little Mermaid meets The Princess Diaries.
Despite the relatively short running time, this latest animated film from Dreamworks is chased through its faded script and unfortunately also dragged. Mundane inconveniences get way too much screen time while more important plot points and even the climax are resolved very quickly. The use of general popular music makes the whole thing even more artificial and the many plot holes and inconsistencies are never addressed. All this together made this quite a challenge to sit through the movie.
Some plus points are the voice cast, world and character design, and the first 30 minutes.
After the series of good films of recent times, Dreamworks has now delivered a stinker.

Arthur [Colman Domingo] and Agatha Gillman [Toni Collette] live in the coastal town of Oceanside, where their teenage daughter Ruby [Lana Condor] is struggling to be a "regular teenager."
