Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken plot
"Discover the hero just beneath the surface."
Sweet and bumbling sixteen-year-old Ruby Gillman tries desperately to fit in at Oceanside High, but most of the time she feels invisible. She is madly in love with a skater whom she tutors in math, but he only admires her math skills. And Ruby can't go to the beach with the cool kids either, because her overprotective supermom has forbidden her to go into the water. When she does, Ruby discovers that she is a descendant of a long line of kraken queens and warriors. She even turns out to be the heir to the throne of her imposing grandmother who is the queen of the warriors of the seven seas. It is the task of the krakens to protect the oceans from the vain, power-hungry mermaids, the eternal enemies of the krakens.

Entertaining cartoon. The story is pretty standard and far from original. The implementation is quite successful. The pace is pretty high. The build up is good and soon the adventure begins. The film has the necessary humor, but also enough action. Visually everything looks good. Good for both young and old. 3.0

Arthur [Colman Domingo] and Agatha Gillman [Toni Collette] live in the coastal town of Oceanside, where their teenage daughter Ruby [Lana Condor] is struggling to be a "regular teenager." When she is forced to break her protective parents' cardinal rule, she discovers who (or what) she really is. That makes it impossible to be seen as 'ordinary', but it does provide her with a new friend: the beautiful, popular newcomer Chelsea van der Zee [Annie Murphy]. But there's a catch. Another animated film about being different, self-acceptance, belief in yourself and the like. In that respect, nothing new under the sun, not even in terms of comic relief (a few eccentric friends and a jolly uncle). Good voice interpretations and a limited amount of sentiment prevent this from going down and is painless entertainment for children and their benevolent parents.
