Early Man plot

"Time to test their metal"

Set in an era when prehistoric creatures and mammoths roamed our planet, 'Early Man' tells the story of little Dug, who is ill-suited as a caveman due to his size. When disaster strikes and his tribesmen are driven from their home by Bronze Age rivals, it's Dug, the clumsiest of them all, who must prove what he can do. Dug and his friend Hognob take on Lord Nooth and his henchmen.

Well, actually, I was a bit disappointed. It's a fun film in itself, but by Aardman standards, I think it's subpar.
I have the impression that they're somewhat stylistically stuck; the design remains quite consistent in each film, and the little jokes, usually found in the details and (otherwise) visual humor, seem fewer in number and quality than in previous films. Not that they're lacking, but I chuckled less than I'm used to with Aardman films.
I get the impression they're becoming a bit too mainstream, less daring to be truly different and strange, and too fixed in their format. I thought it was rather weak that they, as I think not the first, if not the umpteenth, to show "the origins of football" and use the sport as a weapon to reclaim their territory, with predictable results. Understandable, and children will probably just love it, but unworthy of Aardman, in my opinion. I consider them more creative than this.
I do, however, find the reference to our Western lifestyle, in which we essentially steal from, if not plunder, non-Western countries such as Ghana and Congo (and therefore also our own world), to be commendable.
Perhaps the film needs a second viewing, and then I'll discover layers of jokes that escaped me on Monday. But for now, mild disappointment prevails, which is reflected in a rating that, for me, is relatively low.

This disappointing film from Aardman Studios is only sporadically funny and doesn't quite reach the level of Chicken Run and Shaun the Sheep Movie. This is because the screenplay tells a predictable story with a plot that leaves little room for the creative visual humor so typical of Nick Park's work. The best moments are the offhand jokes that are easily overlooked. The voice cast is a "guess who?" cast of British comedy talent, including impersonator Rob Brydon, the dryly comic Richard Ayoade, Johnny Vegas, and Timothy Spall. Eddie Redmayne is unrecognizable and surprisingly good as the lead character, Dug, but it remains a mediocre effort. And you expect more from an Aardman production.

Not long ago, I saw Isle of Dogs, Wes Anderson's stop-motion film. That makes Early Man even more disappointing. While they're impressive at what they do with animation and stop-motion, it could be a bit more. This is more of the standard production animation films you regularly see, like Trolls, Secret Life of Pets, Angry Birds, Ferdinand, The Croods, Planes, etc. Fun for kids, but it lacks some creativity. Here too, the story is wafer-thin about a soccer match between the good guys and the bad guys. The end result is rather thin, with humor geared towards children. They'll certainly enjoy it, but that doesn't do me much good.
