Anti-Communist animated film based on Orwell's famous book. The whole system is depicted in a caricatural way. Used to be often used as educational material. I thought the animation was too old-fashioned to give a high mark, but behind what used to be political propaganda, there is now a universal message that will ensure that this work survives time.

Mediocre filming.

I read the book last month, and I was deeply impressed by the story. Unfortunately, this film adaptation was less appealing to me. The animations and music are pretty good. But the fact that almost the entire story is told by a voice-over bothers me quite a bit. Many scenes could have been told with more dialogue, but now it remains with a few rare moments. It creates a distance from the story.

In addition, I think it is a shame that two iconic, and particularly visual scenes from the book did not make it into the film; the moment when the pigs start walking on two legs, and the card game with the people, where it is no longer clear who is who. A missed opportunity.

Still worth seeing once. But it remains to wait for a film that really does justice to the story. Perhaps in the style of The Lion king (2019)?

Read the book not so long ago, then became curious about the (first) film adaptation.

The cartoon is of course already quite old, although that doesn't say anything about the quality; After all, Disney had already produced quite a few beautiful animation films in the 1950s. You don't have to expect that quality here, because the animation is clearly less high-quality. Still beautifully made, but dated and at times downright ugly.

I liked the book, maybe not too subtle but an imaginative, allegorical narrative of communism. The cartoon follows the story fairly faithfully (except for some details), but the storytelling style was mainly voice-over rather than dialogue. As a result, you got to know the main 'characters' a little less well and it all remains a bit distant.

You might also want to try the 1999 live-action film.

3*
