Not dear Malik.

The problem with movies like this is that they depend on a precarious balance. And once that balance begins to fall in one direction, there is often little that can be done about it. That means that some find the film very beautiful and poetic, others find the film very boring and cheesy. I fall into the second camp.

Big problem for me is that I absolutely don't see Malick's visual genius. I don't use the color very much, he does very little with lighting, camera work is not strong enough and the editing also leaves much to be desired. It's not that Malick isn't doing his best, it's clear that he is doing things very consciously, but the intended effect is not coming.

It's also a bit strange that I never got the feeling that I was really stuck in 1600. I have no apparent reason for it, natural images are what they are, but it never really came across as a historical film, which also got in the way of the atmosphere.

The soundtrack isn't bad, but not strong enough to make up for the lack of visual punch. Calm, neat music that doesn't do much wrong, but it doesn't exactly make you emotional. The voice-overs, on the other hand, are a lot less. The whispering and panting completely misses its target and makes for loads of kitsch.

Don't do it for the story and romance. Malick aims for atmosphere and poetry but, as far as I'm concerned, it fails blatantly. I respect that at least he doesn't do it half-heartedly, but that doesn't make the film any better unfortunately. And 180 minutes becomes a very long sit.

1.5*

The new world is very realistic and beautiful!

The film beautifully shows how people lived and communicated at that time. At first I thought the movie was a bit boring because not much happened. But later in the film it gets more exciting and captivating.

The setting of the film is also very nicely made.

Criterion released this film on a beautiful copy. In addition to the beautiful book, there are also 3 discs in it, but of course we go for the extended version. The images are astonishingly beautiful because of the music. Especially the beginning and end of this almost 3 hour film. Okay, the script rattles on all sides and is a bit messy at times, but you're still in a kind of dream world. Beautifully done, especially towards the end. Pocahontas is doing well just those crazy too plump lips. Saw that she was born in Germany and raised in America. Heard little of her except in the somewhat well-known Western Hostiles. The New World is not an absolute winner, but visual music makes a lot of good. The separate romances of two lovers in two worlds also do well.

Great movie for fans! Tip listen to the film through your headphones
