This strong action film by William Friedkin receives an incomprehensible low score. This film knows the cat-and-mouse game like no other and is therefore sizzling when we talk about a hunt between master and pupil. The hunt is being opened at a high pace and there is certainly no shortage of action. The characters develop fascinatingly and are strongly shaped by Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Toro. The feeling that as a viewer you almost get sympathy for the hit man and start to empathize with him works well for me. The film certainly has technical flaws, but in general this is a very strong film.

Add First Blood, a little bit of Fugitive/US Marshals and a dash of Predator, mix it up and you've got First Blood 2003!

Normally you would say a "relaxation", but because the above films are top notch, those elements still leave a reasonably good action thriller, especially when you give Tommy Lee Jones and Del Toro the lead roles.

The start of the film is immediately hard and violent, which makes it immediately clear what the psychological state of Hallam is.

Engaging Bonham and the manhunt that follows could have been an extension of The Fugitive/US Marshals and if Bonham had simply been called "Samuel Gerard" it would have been very appropriate.

However, with a little more playing time, a little more peace and even more tension, there could have been more room for Hallam to "escape, hide and survive".
Now everything happened at a rapid pace, which was a pity, but otherwise not disturbing.

What was a bit disturbing was how the appearance of the role of Tommy Lee Jones was portrayed. a slightly older man with a beard who, in his neat shirt, goes into battle with a young, well-trained ex-soldier. Although trained by him himself, so that would work in his favor, but a slightly smoother appearance would have made more of an impression!

The film has enough tension, enough action, some nice chases and certainly some nice knife fights, in the woods, in the flashbacks and towards the end.

Good!

I really have a hard time with films where the “perpetrator” is actually a victim, but this victim is portrayed as the perpetrator.

That was also the case with the movie “Dont Breathe” where 3 idiots decide to break into a blind man and attack him as well. I saw that as self-defense, so I felt 0 pity for those 3 burglars. I hoped throughout the film that all 3 would be eliminated and therefore didn't think it was a thriller, but a wonderful, entertaining action film.

And with this film, I felt the same way: I felt sorry for Hallam and all the time hoped he would get away. After all, he didn't hurt anyone? He didn't kill anyone just like that. He only killed the people who came before him in the woods with heavy guns. So I also saw that as self-defense. He could have killed so many people on his flight, eg the man on the tram, but he didn't.

Plus, I didn't think the story was well fleshed out and unfinished, because there was clearly more to this whole conspiracy against Hallam. That's why I think he's a victim and I don't think he was out to do any harm.

Too bad they didn't make room for LT in the movie and he didn't ask what was there and what drove him to those murders. So that part has been completely ignored and skipped. Very annoying, a film without a plot.
