Very mediocre.

Wong is clearly trying to make a hip, cool movie, but he just lacks the talent. It's also not the first HK director to go wrong with Hollywood, although this is something different than what a Hark and stuff made in America.

The attempts at humor are very bland, the hip editing during the action scenes looks rather cheap and the actors are really broke. So you're watching a film that tries really hard, never gives up, but rarely if ever hits the mark.

The whole plot with Wahlberg's in-laws could have worked out like this, the action is too minor for a film like this and what remains looks well-intentioned, but actually drags on far too long. It's a shame, because I think a few small details could have made a big difference, but in the end it turned into a rather annoying sit, where it's mainly the director's enthusiasm that softens a bit.

2.0*

'Forced hip/cool' is an understatement! The especially of Zhong An Zu (1993) 'famous' Kirk Wong made the switch to Hollywood with little success, The Big Hit is the result . And it can be seen in everything that this is a Hong Kong director in America. The somewhat typical HK humor translates quite poorly with such a Western cast. The action, on the other hand... remains very nice. Gare, impractical antics that are more cool than effective; that's what it's about. When those scenes stay out too long (everything between the first and last quarter), it's a lot less.

“Technically, you can call me a hitman.”

“Really? a hitman? Does that pay well?”

Nice. The Big Hit is more than successful as an action comedy, and fortunately the film manages to maintain this combination until the end. Because it doesn't get too sentimental or too dramatic, and the light-hearted atmosphere and the funny situations in which the characters find themselves remain the film's greatest strength. And there are also some hard scenes, but these moments are also brought with a smile. Wahlberg, Applegate, Phillips, Brooks etc. All actors are perfectly cast. Entertaining nonsense, but there's nothing wrong with it when it's done so well.
