After the huge success of Superman in 1978, this sequel was soon released. Originally, much of Superman II was filmed simultaneously with the first Superman. However, director Richard Donner was fired after he had already shot 80% of Superman II. Richard Lester was second director during the original production and eventually completed the film.

Gene Hackman did not return for Superman II, so all of his scenes are from Richard Donner's original cut. To prevent the makers from having to pay an astronomical amount to Marlon Brando again, the role of Jor-El was replaced by Lara, Jor-El's wife.

The problematic production has its influences on Superman II: the story is a bit messy and several characters come off badly. But Superman II can still be called a successful sequel. Just like the previous film, the action is again perfectly portrayed and is well interspersed with the necessary humor. The tricks are once again excellent and the sets are also very nice. Christoper Reeve and Margot Kidder are once again in great shape and Terence Stamp is also a successful villain. The film was again a huge success.

The second Superman movie was shot more or less simultaneously with the first, and was initially set to be released shortly after the first. When filming was nearing completion, director Richard Donner got in trouble with the producers and was taken off the project. The film was re-shot with a different director and the scenes already shot disappeared into the archive.

Some twenty-five years later, in 2006, Richard Donner finally finished his film and it was this version that I saw tonight. Compared to the 1980 original, villain Gene Hackman has a bigger share and there's the return of Marlon Brando as Jar-El, Superman's father. Furthermore, the film is clearly edited faster and the special effects are better, of course thanks to the digital possibilities of 2006. The film also has a completely different ending. I thought it was a nice viewing experience. And as far as I'm concerned, much better than the rather corny first part. 3.5*

General Zod: "I've discovered his weakness... he actually cares for these earth people."
Ursa: "Like pets?"
General Zod: "I suppose so."
Ursa: "Sentimental idiot!"

I've seen the Richard Lester version. Despite the fact that this movie is from 1980 and seems a bit corny, it's still worth watching if you're a Superman fan. At least a lot better than the new Superman movies from Zack Snyder and Bryan Singer. Of course the special effects are no longer up to date and the three enemies look a bit ridiculous in their black pyjamas. But these Superman II and Superman (1978) most closely resemble the Superman comic books. The story is fun and the pace is always quite fast. Christopher Reeve is the best Superman performer and Margot Kidder is also perfectly cast as Lois Lane. She is not just the damsel in distress but really contributes to the film. I was annoyed by the mother crying over the crossbar that threatens to fall on her pram, instead of simply getting out of the way with the pram!
