The Blues Brothers plot

"They're on a mission from God."

When Jake Blues is released from prison, he and his brother Elwood visit the orphanage where they were raised. Sister Maria Stigmata tells them that the institution is in need of money. The two brothers want to help her, but she doesn't want their stolen money. The elderly caretaker Curtis, who raised them and instilled in them a love for music, encourages them to go to church more often. They meet Rev. Jones, who gives a fiery sermon, followed by an enthusiastic gospel with the impressive church choir. While the churchgoers enthusiastically dance along, Jake has a divine inspiration: he will breathe new life into his former blues band.

In itself special that as a musician I had never seen this famous music film. Because what a fun movie this is. The Blues Brothers are iconic characters with their suits, hats and glasses and keep their cool in every situation. With a lot of humor and even more music, this hopeful comic story of redemption is told.

However, I also noticed some downsides. For example, the role of Jake's ex was completely unnecessary, and her revenge actions were out of place in this light-hearted story. The same can be said of the group of Nazis. Their contribution could have been easily missed or we wouldn't have had that absurd end of the chase in the movie.

While the film tells a warm story about friendship and helping others, visual attention is mainly paid to crazy music scenes (the western bar is my favorite) that give the story the necessary swing.

The huge over-the-top ending is slightly out of place compared to the rest of the film, but it's still a joy to watch. Countless police cars that are wrecked and finally even the army comes along with a tank (!) to help Chicago get rid of the Blues Brothers.

The music icons that play a part in this film alone make it worthwhile. Together with the story, the action and humor, this film is a joy to watch!

4*

Also revised on 4K nice transfer and yes that music finishes it off of course. Watched it this time in English with the long version, because it was not available in the Netherlands again, as is often the case. The great thing is that you also get nice English subtitles for the songs. Also often a problem in the Netherlands. I hadn't seen The Blues Brothers for a while, but given my high point I watched it again in these crazy times. It is not very strong in the first hour . He only really comes loose in the second act and then goes completely wild in the third act. Far over the top, but what does it matter in such a film. The story itself is not really great, but what makes the film so nice are all the trips, arrivals and the many music that I certainly like and still do after all these years. This way Everybody Needs Somebody remains a delicious cracker. But Aretha Franklin also participates nicely. She can act well by the way. Also funny is James Brown. Sometimes you imagine yourself in Sister Act. But many music styles are well present here. That some of us here undervalue this film may be because the story is not tight and our protagonists seem a bit colorless. That's a bit true, but it has become a kind of musical road trip. And then there are some weird dudes in there like that girl we have to wait a long time for why she's after them. But for a movie like this you just have to watch lay back and especially listen to the great music. Kept me entertained for almost 2.5 hours.

Movie 4.5

A great film in almost every way. That's what a musical should be: witty and cheerful. And with the two dry but also cartoonish Blues brothers on a divine mission, it can't go wrong. Much of the humor came from various cameos, of which Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin in particular amused me. Spielberg also stopped by as a tax official at the end. The catchy music is universally known and I also think a better soundtrack than Fame from the same year. Only Cab Calloway with his terrible Minnie the Moocher was a miss for me. Anyway, I think these Blues Brothers are superior to Fame in just about every way. I don't think I've ever seen so much cannon damage as in this movie during two monstrous car chases. What a mess! In the end, it seems like half the States are after them. A handsome movie!
