Shichinin no Samurai plot

"The Mighty Warriors Who Became the Seven National Heroes of a Small Town."

Feudal 16th-century Japan is ravaged by wars and itinerant gangs. One of those gangs targets the harvest of a small farming village, but the gang members decide not to return until the harvest is complete. However, a villager overhears this conversation. The village elder orders some fellow villagers to look for unemployed samurai, who will defend the village in exchange for food. They find an elderly, weary samurai, who has sympathy for the defenseless villagers and grants their request. He recruits five other samurai and can even count on an initially unwanted companion: the inexperienced but self-conscious Kikuchiyo. The others are experienced fighters, but know that they have to face a great force majeure.

Film that I have always kept away from, a bit because of the long running time, but mainly because of the theme: a film about swordsmen is not for me at all. However, seeing Yôji Yamada's wonderful samurai trilogy changed my mind.

I have to say that the film did not disappoint me. The story is quite interesting and the acting —especially from Takashi Shimura—and the authentic-looking settings look good too. I got tired of the constant jabbering back and forth. In my opinion, the film could have been a little shorter.

Why the film is seen as a masterpiece by Kurosawa is beyond me. In any case, I think the aforementioned samurai films by Yamada are a lot nicer.

Partly because of the powerful beginning and the story that seemed to appeal to me, I had the 5 * in mind for the first hour. Samurai movies aren't really for me and that's why this one didn't grab my attention. But this story is about a poor village that wants to protect itself from thieves, and I find that interesting. Cinematically, there is really nothing to complain about. The dialogues are very powerful, although good subtitles are a must for that. Everything looks realistic and the samurai manage to convince in their role.

But... unfortunately that doesn't apply to all characters, there are two that are overdone , on the one hand that is that crazy samurai, and on the other hand it's not so much one character, but more a small group of characters, namely the bange part of the farmers which is quite exaggerated. It would have been nice to have such character traits as comic relief , but unfortunately they continue throughout the movie. A shame, because otherwise it might just end up in my top 10. Nevertheless, this is a must for every film lover, and the three hours fly by in no time. Decent 4*.

Shichinin no Samurai

Wonderful film by Kurosawa. Shichinin no Samurai is a long session, but not a single scene feels superfluous and especially the bond that you build up with the characters as a viewer is unparalleled by Kurosawa. At the beginning, all the characters are introduced extensively, and it's intriguing to see that each character (especially the seven samurai) really has its own identity and character traits.

Especially Shimada, Kikuchiyo and Katsushiro are beautifully executed, and the actors do a good job too. Mifune is a bit caricatured and his acting is very exaggerated, but you get used to it and by the end you realize that Kikuchiyo may have gone through the most interesting character development of them all. The final section of the battle between the samurai/residents and the bandits is superbly captured, and the final images of the graves of the deceased samurai and residents are iconic.
