Bigger is better Lin must have thought and I'm totally right. Where he proved with the previous parts to be a professional in testosterone blockbusters a la Michael Bay, he gives the second confirmation. Such blockbusters are rare, but if you get one for yourself, the payoff is all the greater. Lin throws it one more step on top. On every level.

Very happy with Rio as the setting, the film has a very threatening atmosphere and a very nice environment. It's great that Lin also comes up with the idea of lumping all the characters from the previous parts together. Still think it's a nice bunch of stuff where every cast member just 'works'. Also the necessary drama, which again works remarkably well here. Lin always knows how to keep the right balance. Johnson is also a nice upgrade, delicious weak one-liners too.

It is mainly the testosterone that makes this rare 'breed' of blockbusters so interesting. Sound design is monstrous and your home cinema set is working overtime, my neighbors have gone on holiday again and they are right. The DTS Master audio track is a beast and in the final chord that the entire arc of Fast Five revolves around you will be completely blown away. If you have to make do with your poor speakers that are in your TV, you're not going to love this, no.

Much better than they were in my memory, and the kind of blockbuster I've come to love since Harman Kardon moved in with me. Highly directed, booming audio design and an excellent interaction between cast, narrative more than adequate and a crazy roller coaster ride. Lin is the Asian equivalent to Michael Bay. A master at what he does.

“This shit just went from mission:impossible to mission: in freaking sanity!”

This is the best movie in the Fast and the Furious franchise. Everything comes together in this film and if you also have Rio de Janeiro as a location, you know that it can't go wrong anymore. The action is stark and spectacular, the humor is successful, there is no shortage of beautiful ladies and the addition of The Rock is one of the best casting choices in the history of casting choices (exaggeration...).

Everything is big, bigger, biggest and sometimes that doesn't work, but in Fast Five it's like all the puzzle pieces fall into place at once. The story is really just an excuse to get the group back together but once that's done you can brace yourself for an explosive movie with one action scene after another. There's nothing wrong with it when it's all portrayed so spectacularly and the chemistry between the actors is so strong. Diesel and Walker are of course the biggest assets, but Ludacris and Gibson are also very nice and provide the comic touch. With the ladies, the honor is held high by Gal Gadot, Elsa Pataky and of course Jordana Brewster and all three know how to fill their somewhat one-dimensional roles well. And The Rock well... A better addition to the already overcrowded cast can't really be done. Fast Five is unpretentious entertainment of the highest level.

Little less than part 4.

Not so much in quality, because Lin can now direct these films with his eyes closed. There are some nice car chases again, in terms of drama it's still not much and the old cast is ready again. So business as usual.

But why in God's name 130 minutes for a clumsy action movie like this. There is absolutely too little material for that, which makes the time between the action scenes just too long. The film also starts to drag here and there, something you would have had less with half an hour shorter.

But it is still solid filler. I don't think it's exceptional, but the action scenes are well put together and provide enough spectacle. Only the balance in this part is on the wrong side. More action, less drama, less stuff please.

2.5*
