Had my doubts about how such a testosterone bomb could be interesting now. But 300 is a lot more entertaining than I thought. The content is far from special and you expect a film with mainly action sequences to feel very empty, but 300 is filled to the brim with form and that compensates here. I expected a CGI party from twelve years ago to feel a bit dated, but it still looks damn good. After his directorial debut Dawn of the Dead, Zack Snyder can go wild here with slow-motions and accelerations and extreme colors. Style elements that only work poorly in his later superhero films, come into their own perfectly here. You could hang 300 on the wall and you have an hour and a half painting. An extremely violent painting, indeed.

It also helps in a movie like this that not all characters are interchangeable figures. Butler is a strong protagonist and a Michael Fassbender in one of his first film roles is also excellent. You don't have to expect a lot of depth from these characters, but I was surprised that I didn't spend the entire film thinking 'who is that again?'. Again a mediocre choice that they choose David Wenham for the role of the narrator, the man who always sounds like his nose is very stuffed up. In between the battle scenes, there are some little things going on around the queen and some other stuff, but who cares? Still took too long, at the time when Dominic West was talking about it, they could have just cram one or two extra fights in slow motion. That would probably have been more fun, because the fights and action scenes are the main protagonist, especially when the film doesn't take it all too seriously. At the slightly too serious moments, the film also immediately becomes a bit kitschy. Such dramatic moments sometimes seemed like a Côte d'Or commercial.

3.5 stars.

I may be one of the few who didn't like this. It's really not my genre of film. As so often and also mentioned here, the content is not particularly special, even bland. Little story, little depth ... but I don't want to judge the film entirely on that because that was to be expected.

Also unlike many, I didn't really like it visually. Did indeed look a bit comic book-like, that was perhaps the intention, but I thought it was all a bit too graphic. That wolf, the Persians, even the Spartans... Except for the women, everything seemed too created and too heroic: the bad guys were the ugly ones and the good guys were the adonis with their six packs. The entire film was too focused on the spectacle and the slow motions that popped up all the time.

It was positive that it was well portrayed, because in many war or spectacle films it often goes too fast or too chaotic and you hardly see what is happening.

"My arm!"

"It's not yours anymore!"

I certainly expected the bombastic and richly CGI-adorned spectacle, the bizarre circus with monsters, deformed people and a transvestite like Persian porn prince Xerxes. And the rock music didn't suit me very well either. But I do appreciate the boldness of Snyder's choices. Furthermore, super macho Butler is cut as King Leonidas and he plays that role with gusto. Fassbender and Headey are always good but have little to do. The story is wafer thin and a voice over helps a bit to disguise that. It is also necessary because it doesn't really have much more to the body than underwear, sandals and muscular six-packs.

That all seems like I thought it was a very mediocre film, but visually there is enough to enjoy with many beautiful shots. All very stylized of course and with an excess of kitschy filtering, but for the most part it looks pretty good. It's just nowhere near as great as Gladiator. A few years later, Snyder was still going strong with the unsurpassed Watchmen.
