Mickey Rourke confirmed for Iron Man 2

Well, it took a while, but at long, long, long (long, long) last, Mickey Rourke has signed on to play Whiplash, the bad guy in Iron Man 2.

Rourke’s involvement with the Jon ‘Favs’ Favreau-directed sequel was first mooted back in January, but with rumours circulating about an initial low offer from Marvel, he never actually signed on the dotted line. Until, Trailer Man intones, now.

That offer had been put at a mere $250,000, the sort of money that Empire wouldn’t get out of bed for, quite frankly, and so we can’t blame Rourke for holding out for some extra moolah. After all, the man is now an Oscar-nominated actor – although you can bet that, had he won the Oscar for The Wrestler, his price would have gone through the roof.

However, it seems that Rourke’s commitment was never really in doubt – he had been tapped up repeatedly on the Oscar circuit by Downey Jr., and he had also been meeting with Favreau and the film’s writer, Justin Theroux to give input into his character.

And that character is interesting. When we first heard that Rourke was set to play a Russian arms dealer who becomes a thorn in Tony Stark’s increasingly boozy side, we presumed that he would be the Crimson Dynamo, an armoured foe who had, at one stage, been set to be the villain in the first Iron Man.

Turns out, though, that Rourke’s Whiplash will incorporate elements of the Crimson Dynamo’s backstory and appearance, along with elements of the comic book Whiplash, a former Stark employee who builds a costume that allows him to wield cybernetically controlled and electrically charged whips that can cause some serious damage to the Iron Man armour. Think Indiana Jones plugged into the mains and you’re on the right path.

We have to say, we’re intrigued to see where Favs is going to take this sequel, given that the first was one of the most purely enjoyable comic book movies in ages. And we’d be lying if we said that we weren’t excited about the prospect of watching Rourke and Downey – two former Hollywood bad boys turned good – duking it out on the big screen.

Filming on Iron Man 2 starts in April, with a release date set for next May.

Thor, Cap & Avengers get new dates

There’s been a lot of Marvel-related activity over the last 24 hours, with the news that Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson have signed on to star as Whiplash and Black Widow, respectively, in Iron Man 2.

But, as Jimmy Cricket might say, c’mere… there’s more. A lot more, in fact, for it was today announced that Marvel Studios has been rejigging the release dates of three of its biggest upcoming properties.

Kenneth Branagh’s Thor, which had been scheduled to come out on July 16, 2010, has been pushed back almost a full calendar year. Now the Norse God of Thunder will be steaming into action on June 17, 2011.

The First Avenger: Captain America, the WWII-set introduction of Marvel’s star-spangled flagbearer, will now come out on July 22, 2011. The Joe Johnston-directed adventure had previously been scheduled for May 6, 2011.

The positioning of two members of The Avengers just a month apart is no accident, for Marvel has moved its most ambitious movie back a year, allowing momentum to build up with the intro of Cap and Thor.

The superhero mash-up, which will see Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and maybe Black Widow, Nick Fury and previously unannounced hero come together, will now come out on May 4, 2012, ten months on from its original date of July 15, 2011.

And the Marvel madness doesn’t end there. In the summer of 2011, you won’t be able to swing an enchanted hammer without hitting a Marvel superhero, after it was also confirmed that Sony will release Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 on May 6, 2011.

Iron Man 2 remains where it was – on May 7, 2010. And, given the two-year gap between that movie and the original, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Iron Man 3 announced at some point for 2012, possibly slotting into a post-Avengers date.

Tom Cruise in remake 'Butch Cassidy'

Tom Cruise.Tom Cruise wil een remake maken van de western 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' uit 1969. Cruise kreeg daarvoor al eerder de zegen van Paul Newman voor die vorig jaar aan longkanker overleed. Newman speelde Cassidy in de oorspronkelijke film, Robert Redford speelde Sundance.

Volgens de Britse krant Daily Express wil Cruise in de nieuwe film Sundance spelen en wil hij John Travolta in de rol van Cassidy. Verwacht wordt dat Cruise het filmproject mogelijk wil maken door zijn gage te beperken. Er is al een scriptschrijver aangezocht.

De oorspronkelijke film staat in de tophonderd van meest opbrengende prenten aller tijden. (hln.be)

Christian Bale in film van Kings meesterwerk De Donkere Toren

Enkele dagen geleden werd bekendgemaakt dat J.J. Abrams het boek ‘The Dark Tower’ van horrorkoning Stephen King zal gaan verfilmen. Vandaag is bekend geworden dat Christian Bale (waarschijnlijk) de hoofdrol zal gaan spelen.

Dit zei acteur Michael Sheen (‘Frost/Nixon’) op zijn Twitter-pagina. Toen hem gevraagd werd welke rol hij nog graag een keer zou willen spelen, antwoordde hij “Roland van Gilead, maar ik ben niet geschikt voor die rol. Ik heb gehoord dat Christian Bale ‘m gaat spelen voor J.J. Abrams”.

‘The Dark Tower’ gaat over een zogenaamde “gunslinger” (revolverheld), een antiheld genaamd Roland Deschain. Hij is de laatste van de lijn der gunslingers, en heeft zichzelf als doel gesteld het bereiken van een zekere Donkere Toren waar de kwade Randall Flagg heerst. Het boek bevat elementen van science-fiction, fantasy, het Wilde Westen, en horror. King heeft onder meer de legende van Koning Arthur, The Lord of the Rings, en ‘The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly’ als inspiratiebronnen genoemd. Het personage Roland is gebaseerd op het gedicht van de Engelse dichter Robert Browning, “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came”, dat gebaseerd zou zijn op een nachtmerrie die Browning ooit had.

King heeft in totaal zes vervolgdelen op ‘The Dark Tower’ geschreven, dus als de eerste film een succes wordt – en met een combinatie van Adams, Bale, en King zou dat toch moeten lukken – mogen we rekenen op een hele reeks aan spannende horrorfilms met de Batman-ster in de hoofdrol.

J.J. Abrams heeft gezegd dat dit project zich nog in een zeer pril stadium bevindt. Hij wil uiteindelijk samen met Damon Lindelof het script gaan schrijven. “We hebben onlangs de rechten voor de verfilming van ‘The Dark Tower’ gekocht,” vertelt hij. “Damon is nu uiteraard nog steeds bezig met (de tv-serie) ‘Lost’, en we hebben onlangs samengewerkt aan ‘Star Trek’. Hopelijk beginnen we meteen met ‘The Dark Tower’ als Damon klaar is met ‘Lost’.”

Kan wel eens verschrikkelijk interessant worden, vooral omdat de boeken geniaal zijn!

Voordat ze beginnen met filmen moet ik het eerst nog zien. Dit bericht dook met dezelfde naam als regisseur werd volgens mij al voor het eerst een jaar of drie geleden op. Neemt niet weg dat ik enorm benieuwd ben.

Christopher Nolan's nieuwe project is een sci-fi film genaamd Inception

Rejoice and be glad, for Christopher Nolan has decided upon a follow-up to the billion-dollar success of The Dark Knight, and is making a sci-fi action film called Inception that he wrote himself.

The plan is to shoot the film this summer for release in summer 2010, with Nolan directing and producing (along with his partner Emma Thomas). But what else do we know about the film? Well, pretty much nothing: it's said to be "a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind", which we're assuming is not saying it's a remake of The Cell, even though that's the closest example to that particular definition we've got.

At this point, we'd be pleased if Nolan said he was planning to direct a movie adaptation of his weekly shopping list, so he's positively spoiling us with a sci-fi action film. He is also, incidentally, attached to direct a big-screen version of The Prisoner before he possibly, maybe, perhaps returns for another Batman film. We'll keep you updated as we hear more.

2. DiCaprio to star in Inception

Leonardo DiCaprio has signed on to star in Inception, the first film post-Dark Knight for director Christopher Nolan. And if you thought we were excited about this film yesterday, that’s got nothing on how we feel about it today.

As with virtually everything Nolan does, the project is shrouded in mystery, cloaked in secrecy and swaddled in subterfuge – all that is known about it is that it’s a contemporary sci-fi action movie set within the architecture of the mind. Which is infinitely preferable to a contemporary sci-fi action movie set within Stoke.

DiCaprio, who’s at the no red M&Ms stage of negotiations, has been attached to sci-fi projects before, notably the Kurt Vonnegut adaptation Cat’s Cradle. But this would mark his first official foray into the genre… unless you count Critters 3. And nobody counts Critters 3.

The casting, of course, won’t stop there. Rumour has it that Ellen Page is this close to signing on to the movie, which will start shooting later this summer. Warner Bros. is raiding the piggybank for this one.

Nieuwe Disney-Pixar Fantasy film 'John Carter of Mars', naar het boek van schrijver Edgar Rice Burroughs (bekend van zijn 'Tarzan'romans)

Deze big-budget film zal worden geregiseerd door Andrew Stanton.

De release is gepland voor mei 2010.

Het is dan ook niet bekend waar de film precies over zal gaan. Universal heeft echter ervaring met dergelijke licenties, omdat het ook al bezig is met films gebaseerd op de bordspellen Zeeslag en Candyland.

Asteroids wordt geproduceerd door Lorenzo di Bonaventura, die ook verantwoordelijk is voor de deze maand uit te komen nieuwe GI Joe-film.

Ik las net dat Katie Cassidy in Dallas (2010) zou gaan spelen, de verfilming van de succesvolle tv-serie als dochter van John Travolta. Op een andere site las ik dat Travolta was vervangen door Ben Stiller? Weet iemand hier toevallig het fijne van? Gaat het project überhaupt nog door?

Las het nergens op MM dus: ook Predator krijgt weer een vervolg. Predators. Regie: Imród Antal (?). Productie: Robert Rodriguez.

Naast de big budget Disney/Pixar productie 'John Carter of Mars', is er nu ook een tweede versie van hetzelfde verhaal van schrijver Edgar Rice Burroughs in de maak.

Die is afkomstig van B-film productie maatschappij 'The Asylum', en gaat 'Princess of Mars' heten.

De film zou op 29 december al uitkomen.

De hoofdrollen zijn voor Antonio Sabato (John Carter) en Traci Lords (Dejah Thoris)

De cast van de Disney/Pixar versie : Taylor Kitsch (John Carter) Lynn Collins (Dejah Thoris) en verder Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morten,Polly Walker,Dominic West, en Thomas Hayden Church.

Dat is altijd met de Pixar producties, 'Up' had afgelopen jaar ook zo'n flauwe goedkope versie, Flyigh High ofzo?

Stallone gaat naar Rambo V nu ook nog Rocky 7 maken.

Zelfs zijn vrouw raadde het al af, maar de artiest in hem zegt dat hij het moet doen.

Hoe dan ook, wat mij betreft laat maar komen die hap.

Rocky 6 vond ik erg mooi.

Nieuwe Tarzanfilm in de planning.

Regisseur Stephen Sommers (o.a. The Mummy) en scriptschrijver Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean) bereiden momenteel een nieuwe Tarzanfilm voor.

Release is gepland voor 2011.

Beiden hebben hun keuze voor Hugh Jackman als Tarzan te kennen gegeven. .

Of die het uiteindelijk ook gaat worden is nog de vraag.

Met zijn 42 jaar zou hij een van de oudste Tarzan acteurs ooit worden als het doorgaat.

In ieder geval wordt het een totaal andere en sensationelere Tarzan verfilming dan alle tot nog toe geziene.
