Definitely one of the better horror movies and my favorite. I've seen it several times now and it still intrigues me. The melancholy atmosphere of a Chicago slum, the myth about the Candyman, the ominous bees, the psychological games, the dark music… I love it.

Tony Todd also just has it in him to play the creep so this role was made for him.

There were 2 other parts, but this one remains the better one and every horror fan should have seen it, because they are no longer made like that.

5 stars

You called?

Traveling abroad is always a great opportunity to catch a movie on Netflix, which is not included in the Dutch offer. Also Candyman, a film that I normally wouldn't watch, but in this way I gave it a chance. I had heard some stories here and there, but I expected a simple slasher. Great was the surprise that Candyman is a surprisingly intelligent horror that goes a lot deeper than the description suggests. All this accompanied by a beautifully hypnotic soundtrack, which gets better and better the more you hear it. And besides, this horror dates back to the good old days where they still used practical effects instead of ugly CGI!

Although the story technically is good, I was somewhat disappointed by Candyman himself. Although his appearance is also very well done to a certain extent, he never frightened me at any time. Also the hook that was used as a murder weapon, I found today quite outdated , although you have to take into account that you are watching a 1992 movie. Another drawback I found that, although the story is strong, I think it could have started a little more smoothly.

Still, Candyman in its entirety is still a breath of fresh air in the horror field, even in 2018. The balance between drama and horror is just right, and contains just that ending which is a bit over the top but does leave the film with a bang (in a positive sense). And then that great soundtrack again..

3.5*

More of an artistic horror film I find Candyman's associations with terms like "gore" and "shocking" very exaggerated. It's really more about atmosphere : the rancidity of the big city with graffiti, concrete, rubbish heaps, shitty and splattered toilets (that was the most gruesome thing about the film). The use of dirty colors should make the decor of urban decay even more desolate than it already is. Furthermore, the almost mystical music with heavy organs and heavenly choruses.

Helen, who investigates a persistent urban legend, "the candyman", is confronted by a sinister figure who wants to add her to his terrifying legend.. . In a way, Candyman, like Freddy Kruger, is a killer who can only survive if people believe in it. .

When I saw this movie on VHS back in the day, it didn't bother me much, maybe because my horror mindset wasn't geared to it at the time. It's still a movie with flaws (Candyman isn't exactly iconic and terrifying). but I also see a lot of qualities that I hadn't noticed before. Virginia Madsen is arguably the best role of her career here.
