Story based on the play of the same name about the panic surrounding the news of the HIV-AIDS outbreak in New York in the 1980s. Although the directors tried to cover up the news as much as possible, gay activists and the medical world soon fought to make it negotiable and to bring the disease to a halt as soon as possible.

An excellent film about a deadly disease that struck gay men in the early 1980s. A compelling story about AIDS before it even had a name. But above all, it's a story about the gay community's struggle to be heard. Several poignant scenes and excellent acting make this a 4.0-star film.

A rewatch makes this film even more impressive. Content-wise, this is perhaps the strongest thing I've ever seen on screen. Even though I, and others, personally played no part in these abuses, it feels like a rather shameful episode in our Western history, of which there are unfortunately already more than enough. I'm also deeply intrigued by the entire gay development in the United States, but the way Mark Ruffalo conveys this to the viewer is magnificent. The connection and differences between sex and love couldn't have been better portrayed by the constantly enraged Ruffalo. Along with Casey Affleck, he might just be my favorite actor at the moment.
The only weaker role came from that kid from The Bing Bang Theory, a bit too cheesy in my opinion.

Mark Ruffalo is one of the most versatile actors of his generation, and he once again demonstrates his class in this retrospective of the frantic early days of the AIDS era. He plays Ned Weeks, a gay man passionately committed to increasing AIDS research, especially as the virus begins to affect victims within his personal circle of friends and acquaintances. He finds support from Dr. Emma Brookner (Julia Roberts in one of her finest performances), who, however, proves to be a voice crying in the wilderness within the medical community. Ned and a few friends form an advocacy group to raise awareness of AIDS on behalf of the gay community, but his aggressive approach is not well-received by everyone.
This is not so much a historical reconstruction, like for example "And the Band Played On (1993)", but more a character study about a man searching for acceptance of his identity, not only by the government but also by those immediately around him and in particular his brother (Alfred Molina, also excellent) and it is the scenes with Ned's brother, as well as with his infected lover (Matt Bomer, whose compelling performance resulted in a Golden Globe) that provide the most moving moments in this made-for-television drama.
