This film seems to be deeply buried in dust. Beautiful drama nonetheless, with very beautiful cinematography. I have rarely seen the bayou in Louisiana so beautifully in films. The bayou forms a border between the very last wilderness, inhabited by people of a completely different kind, and modern civilization. The inhabitants here do not seem to care about modernization. They live with their own customs and their own superstitions.

Diana and her daughter, in search of distant relatives, arrive at their Sullivan's frame on an island in the swamps. There are dark family secrets hidden, overshadowed by the memory of Joe, Ruth's husband of 15 years missing and Diana's uncle. It is mainly the clash between two cultures that do not understand each other. A clash that at times becomes quite intense. Hershey plays a striking role as Ruth, a resident of the backwoods. The story is quite thin but don't worry... it never gets boring because of the beautiful images and the fascination that these isolated people radiate. Anyone who enjoyed Winter's Bone should urgently look for this one.

At Cannes, this film was certainly a success, with "Best Actress" for Barbara Hershey and a nomination for the Palme d'Or for the director.

I couldn't really appreciate that rough, raw picture, with almost unbelievable situations and characters that are hard to place.

There was a certain tension, but only in wondering what improbability would occur in the next scene.

The photography of this grim swamp area was remarkable.

Reasonable film about a woman and her daughter who travel to their distant relatives to write a book. The two different cultures are central here, but it could have been worked out a bit more interestingly. Certainly a number of good scenes, but the film is also too slow. Beautiful images of the swamps in Louisiana.
