Pablo, a celebrated director of homoerotic films, is hopelessly in love with Juan, a boy who is unfortunately not very attracted to him. I actually only really like Almodovar when the drama works or the humor is exuberant. Films that fall somewhere in between, like this one, are a bit weaker. Quite nice to watch, but I think there's one twist and one change of tone too many.

A mediocre film about a film director who is in love with a young man, but that love is one-sided. The characters and the story failed to really captivate me (especially the first half). Undoubtedly progressive in some aspects at the time. Unmistakably a film by Pedro Almodóvar (if only for the colorful costumes), who even makes a brief appearance himself.

I think Almodovar is really awesome, and this film doesn't disappoint either. Gay sex, transsexuals, drugs, crooked hooked noses, colorful sets and costumes. Yet, this movie does have its flaws. And those lie mainly in the weird editing, which sometimes jumps from one thing to another. Flashbacks are sometimes sprinkled in, and characters react strangely to each other. It feels quite rushed at times. Sometimes also a bit contrived, and the ending... well, I actually understood very little of the way people behaved in this film.
So certainly not the best Almodovar, but the visuals are fine and it flows nicely, so it's easy to watch. I'd say 3.5 stars.
