Only my second Almodovar after Hable con Ella, but more will follow soon. Another very successful film by perhaps the most famous Spanish director with a fabulous and dazzling Penélope Cruz. I've neglected her a bit, but she does show that she is a great actress. Between all those pulp films are some challenging roles here and there, such as Abre los Ojos (1997) by Alejandro Amenábar.

I had heard a lot about Volver, but had never seen it. A film also with 2 separate plots, but which ultimately have more in common than expected. It's especially the ending that makes the film so strong for me and made me award a narrow 4.0*. The run-up to it is quite monotonous and goes on as usual. Not much happens, but it is mainly Cruz who keeps it going and exciting.

Despite some loaded themes, very lightly and playfully presented, perhaps too much in that respect to not be taken seriously, because there are quite a few holes and coincidences in the plot. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it and as a whole it was definitely a successful film.

Because you now have to tick 'mouth mask' in red letters at the top of your checklist (just under swimming trunks and sun cream), we have decided to ignore the sunny abroad this time. But don't worry because the first heat wave is a fact. Immediately we implement our action plan (renamed 'Operation Viva Espania'). We order Paella, we solemnly uncork a bottle of Cava (sangria is for losers), someone on guitar sings something wistfully and yet we miss something. Almodovar ! what else ? A film by the great Almodovar should not be missed on this sultry evening. We left. The bright colors are already splashing off the screen, the score by Alberto Iglesias fills us with melancholy (the time when hugs were not fined with gas fines) and as a Southern beauty we are richly treated to Penelope Cruz (sorry madame cinemanukerke but this is 'hors category ' - watch the top shot when Cruz does the dishes !) so the atmosphere is immediately good. But despite the 30° degrees I don't get warm from Volver. The (melo) drama is too abstract. There isn't much drama, the characters are flat (no more those weird characters because the prostitute on duty this time is very modal) – we don't empathize, it doesn't affect us. follower. Return of the mother, return of Cruz to the place where her husband is buried, of her childhood, return to home village. But I don't understand why he wants to tell you this. A lukewarm Almodovar anyway. There is another twist alla Almodovar but his soup does not boil over. Disappointed, we bury the DVD in our collection, turn on the radio and hear the weatherman announce rain tomorrow. Great, some rain. Yep, just like in Spain.

A very slow film about loss, in which strong women take care of their own business and in which almost all men are total bums. For a long time spiritual sauce was put on the whole story, but in the end the film turns out to be a crime story in which the murderess lived in hiding. Well. It completely took away the little bit of magic that the film possesses for me.

Two stars, for the nice Spanish atmosphere and one for Cruz.

2*
