Riley the Cop plot

"LOVE LAUGHS AT HOOSEGOW WHEN COP TURNS CUPID"

New York police officer James 'Aloysius' Riley is asked to pick up neighbor David 'Davy' Collins. After being falsely accused of theft, Davy avoids the city and now leads a sinful life in Berlin. Before long, Riley herself succumbs to the temptations of the German metropolis, in the form of the aristocratic Mary Coronelli. He therefore 'generously' allows Davy to stay longer in Berlin to win Mary's heart.

A friendly, anecdotal (silent) comedy about the Irish-American police officer from the title who, without ever arresting anyone, solves everything with an indulgent smile here and a pat on the head there (plus the occasional clever trick, such as moving a street vendor's wrongly parked apple cart to a sidewalk that actually falls under the jurisdiction of *another* officer). A film carried entirely by J. Farrell MacDonald and his superb facial expressions, and somehow he succeeds perfectly in preventing this comedy from turning into a farce, even during his drunken scene. Funny scenes in "Munich" and "Paris" where his profession is recognized by every colleague due to his enormous shoe size (flat feet!), and naturally, Riley makes ample use of the fact that the outside world doesn't *push* for Prohibition. Perhaps not immediately to be expected from this director, but this is a very witty comedy starring a human being rather than a Chaplinesque clown. (Nice opening text too: "You can tell a good cop by the judgments he doesn't make. – From the Philosophy of Riley, the Cop.")
