Very corny.

You've Got Mail 1.0, in which the trio (director and Hanks + Ryan) tries to create a romantic comedy for the first time. The result is not exactly great cinema.

Despite the fact that the film is from '93, there is still a clear 80's atmosphere. It also doesn't help that Hanks and Ryan are pretty corny characters, both the characters and the actors. There is therefore not much chemistry between the two, a bit of the romantic feeling of "knitting sweaters together", not something I immediately get excited about.

You don't have to expect anything from the cinematography and soundtrack. Dullness and honesty are the key words. Add to that a fairly annoying child actor and you have a film that, despite some good intentions, does not convince anywhere. It's that the pace is still okay, although that doesn't mean much when everything is so predictable.

1.5*

“Destiny is something we've invented because we can't stand the fact that everything that happens is accidental.”

Old-fashioned rom-com with pleasant acting by Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Both have the gift of winning the viewer with their engaging play, and that is necessary in Sleepless in Seattle. Because the film lacks sharpness, humor and is sometimes just boring. Hanks and Ryan are kept apart for too long, and as a result Sleepless can't take advantage of the chemistry they have together. The supporting characters can't hide that. The ending is well done. Not too sweet, but just right.

That's what you get when you start a film with expectations that are below all standards. It's all so sweet, and the coincidences in the story are almost miraculous and sweaters were only available in XL in the 90s, and yet! Yet it all fits together like a puzzle. Every beat of a classic movie script is diligently ticked off, and stalking is a minor offense if you put some great 1950s crooner- music to it. In the end, you can't help but get a big smile when Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan look at each other between the clouds. 4*
