Excellent thriller that seemingly effortlessly combines intrigue, sexuality and entertainment. A heat wave paralyzes a small residential area and intensifies the sweltering atmosphere. The distance maintained with ongoing discipline makes the murder mystery extra juicy and sensational. It provokes that now known perversity that I have already encountered in certain melodramas of the time. All the domestic doom and gloom makes the whole feel like a fascinating ecosystem that gives us a glimpse into a hidden world. Grace Kelly is perfect as a high society damsel who wants to prove herself with a striking gluttony. Thelma Ritter (Moe from Pickup on South Street) and Wendell Corey also play convincing supporting roles. The sound has been handled superbly as well, with all sorts of surrounding buzz seeping into the courtyard and the other side producing only soft whispers. Indisputable.

Hitchcock shows with this that he is a master of the genre. Normally you see a murder or a body that they find, which starts a case. Here you sit with James Stewart looking at things that may be suspicious, but without knowing what happened. If anything has already happened! You are swept up in the theories Stewart makes, while he is confined to his bed by a broken leg. The viewer also stays in that room, we hear and see everything from the other characters in the same room.

James Stewart is strong in these kinds of movies. An actor of his time who was never really able to participate in the renewed acting style that started to form around the 1960s. It looks like fascinating theatre, but the actors are masters of the genre. Besides Stewart a beautiful Grace Kelly who has put down a nice list of achievements in a short time. Stewart and Kelly click. That ensures nice dialogues and the necessary charisma on the screen.

A compelling thriller where you follow everything on the edge of your seat. To put the puzzle together with the main characters and find out what actually happened.

Hitchcock may be known as Master of Suspense, but I think he is above all a director who makes wonderfully entertaining films: I think this Rear Window is the pinnacle of that. Films that are set in one room are often stage films, or they are reminiscent of one. Little is done about the fact that the processing is ultimately on celluloid and not on the shelves. Not with this movie. Because although the film takes place in one room, this film cannot actually be performed well on stage. And that really depends on the grandmaster himself. Just how he always gives information with the camera (that first shot! especially nicely adapted afterwards in the last scene) and also uses the camera as Stewart's view of the courtyard. We see the entire film from Stewart, it is precisely that camera that helps because it is always filmed from Stewart's apartment. The film has excellently written lyrics, a divine pace, humor, fun performances (with a delightful Kelly) and although the film sometimes has something old-fashioned, this is mainly wonderful cinema. I wanted to leave my score with this review, but now that I type this part I think: there is really nothing to criticize about this film. 5.0*, making it Hitchcock's best.
