This was a Russell Crowe unknown to me. It is also a film in one of his debut years after he made the switch from Neighbours. A controversial film apparently also at the time that additionally launched Crowe's career. As the leader of a neo-Nazi movement in Mebourne, they are targeting the settled Vietnamese population.

The film shows a raw dark side of a marginalized society. The law of the fittest rules and values like fidelity, loyalty, friendship and recognition are very important. Violence is harsh and part of this culture. Nice to note that one doesn't want to create an us and them story with "good" and "bad" subcultures. Both groups are on their toes and do not shy away from violence. Eye for an eye tooth for a tooth. The violence is recognizable in the sense that it concerns other moral boundaries that are imposed. You don't have to agree with their thinking or acting to understand their actions from their point of view. The film also contains no value war which is fine. Too bad, however, that the feud between the skinheads and Vietnamese as the film progressed somewhat diluted and gave way to the love triangle between Hando, Gabrielle and Davey.

Excellent acting too. Especially from Russell Crowe. However, it is a role that he would not immediately appropriate with his deep yet sultry voice. Other than that, great role. Hesitating between a pass (3.0*) and good (3.5*), but Romper stomper (strange title by the way) deserves the benefit of the doubt with his missing value judgement.

Film with a pretty gray atmosphere that was a bit disappointing at first.

The film immediately goes wild with violent behavior and any kind of weird and moronic behavior. A pretty desolate and sad picture emerges when they see their home. The atmosphere is anarchic and the behavior outrageous. The battle with the Asians and the subsequent flight is well done in all hectic and chaos.

Unfortunately for me, the lack of a clear line and story is a bit disappointing. I would say there is a plan and approach to take back the Asians, but unfortunately the behavior gets bogged down in more rudderless behavior that seems to be separate from past events. Now perhaps there is the idea that the 'skins' are just not that smart, nevertheless I miss a kind of line where everything comes together again.

The atmosphere and behavior remind me a lot of certain moments from A Clockwork Orange, the shabby conditions remind me of Once were warriors. The gray atmosphere is fine and Crowe is quite nice, but the story is somewhat disappointing. Good for once and again soon.

Nice and rough.

Romper Stomper was another typical case of "Do you want this DVD? I don't need it anymore". Then this film stayed on the shelf for a long time, until thanks to the current situation I decided to watch it once and am glad I did.

Nice to see Crowe in a younger role. In my opinion one of his better ones. Nice and dangerous and rough appearance that he has. It's a pity that his character doesn't get much more depth, so we'll have to make do with his charisma and charm.

Romper Stomper knows how to make himself noticed through a relentless and harsh tone. In any case, it soon opens rough and has a hard scene in which we see an extensive fight and chases. Such scenes make Romper Stomper a very entertaining whole.

The merciless and brutal tone is wonderful to see. Hard, cold and relentless. That's how a movie like this should be. However, it is a succession of hard images with little depth or line and that is where Romper Stomper lets it down a bit.

Especially an entertaining 90 minutes like this, but of course it's not very special. Mainly a solid film with some heavy scenes. But also one that you have forgotten after a few scenes, unfortunately. Many attempts at a serious story are not made at all.
