Seven Psychopaths plot

"They Won't Take Any Shih Tzu."

A screenwriter struggles with his script called Seven Psychopaths. But then he is pulled into a dog kidnapping case by his friends (Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken). When the beloved Shih Tzu of a psychopathic mobster (Woody Harrelson) goes missing, the screenwriter finds plenty of inspiration for his screenplay, provided he can live long enough to write it all down.

I'm not a big fan of that extremely absurd British humor anyway. Performed by Britten himself, it is not funny at all and in an American setting it doesn't really get any better. By this I mainly mean those dull dialogues, whether or not supercooled. What did appeal to me was the ingenious story itself with Sam Rockwell who stole the show as a complete idiot. What a cool role ! The rest of the actors did a great job as well. Anyway, I'm not really impressed by Seven Psychopaths. By Martin McDonagh I think In Bruges is a bit higher.

Brilliant movie, brilliant director, brilliant actors.

Only for the real cinephiles among us I think.

Nice combination of Ritchie/Tarantino/Coen brothers.

The plot may be a bit thin, but that is made up for by the great dialogues and excellent acting.

Personally, I think this is Sam Rockwell's best performance yet as an uncontrollable psychopath.

As always, Walken is superb in a supporting role.

This will undoubtedly become a cult classic within a few years.

Nice.

Another McDonagh film that convinces me. As a director, he works fairly slowly. The next film after this one didn't appear until years later, but if it continues to follow this path in terms of stylization I have no problem with it. This Seven Psychopaths is also a film that perfectly reflects the setting of the atmosphere.

For example, the first hour, where all psychopaths are introduced one by one, is very intriguing. The opening is strong, the violence is wonderful and the balance between story and visuals is perfect. Then add a strong playing cast to that and you are well on your way. Rockwell in particular stands out positively in this film.

What I also appreciated is that McDonagh knows how to handle the transitions between genres perfectly. When a fictional psychopath is introduced, the tone of the film changes almost immediately. Without it becoming a completely different film, McDonagh manages to keep this wonderfully under control and still show that we are not looking at another film but at a psychopath.

It is a pity that the second half of the film is a bit less. Once all the introductions are done and the story itself takes precedence, it actually just takes a little less. There are still plenty of moments that hold the attention, but actually there remains a little less surprise despite a few attempts. That's a shame, but it's no different.

In general I could appreciate the film thanks to the characters, the atmosphere but especially the wonderfully smooth first hour. I like McDonagh in style. I don't think this film is as strong as his most recent film, but I do think it is stronger than his 2008 crime film. It's nice that as a director he chooses to stay within the same waters, but can direct completely different films.
