Someone has shot Edgar Lowe Hammle and everyone present at his apartment is a suspect for Philo Vance. The motives are as varied as the number of people in the apartment. So there is Dr. Garden, whose son Floyd was mysteriously killed during a drive, which was dismissed as a suicide. Then there's Mrs Madge Fenwicke-Ralston, who was believed to have completed a horse deal with Edgar. Then there are the blackmailing nurse Gladys Beeton and Edgar's niece Zalia Graem, who knows that her uncle tried to break up with Woode Swift.
