Massachusetts, 1857. Captain Joel Shore and his bride Priscilla board the "Nathan Ross", the whaler his older brother Mark sailed with until his sudden disappearance a few months ago. The missing Mark is found on an island in the South Pacific. He is no longer interested in whaling and he tries to persuade his brother to change course of the "Nathan Ross" and sail to a deserted island. There are said to be pearls worth a fortune at the bottom of a lagoon. However, Joel doesn't feel like embarking on a dangerous adventure. Mark cannot reconcile with that decision and incites the crew of the "Nathan Ross" to mutiny.
