The melancholy of the title is on two levels. First, there's Justine's mental breakdown, who is totally lethargic on what should be the happiest day of her life. At the second level, there is a pessimistic philosophy of the demise of the West. It's not very likely astronomically, and some of those stars are not visible to the naked eye, so it's mostly about the symbolic meaning. Justine loses her youthful innocence; western civilization is losing its ideals; the sadness sets in.
Visually, the first ten minutes and the end are massive. The story about the decomposing family is presented in Dogma style with a hand-held camera, giving you that contrast between big and small. The second half is a little less interesting. In it, the more stable characters also collapse, where Justine already felt the demise coming in the first half.
Bruegel's painting represents childlike innocence; other paintings represent death and destruction. Some images are tableau vivant, most notably Kirsten Dunst as Ophelia in the water. Wagner's music reinforces this melancholy feeling, of yearning longing that remains unanswered.

Incredibly atmospheric. Perhaps the best portrayal of depression ever. Furthermore, I am not culturally savvy enough to recognize the many layers of symbolism that are hidden everywhere, but even without that it is a beautiful film.
You shouldn't turn on this movie if you're in the mood for entertainment.

Bit of a strange movie. Kirsten Dunst is also acting very strange throughout the film. That whole wedding party is so very elongated and does not really interest you for a moment. At the end of the film, planet Earth suddenly appears in danger due to an imminent collision with the planet Melancholia. Either there is a lot of symbolism behind this or this whole film is very strangely constructed. Now Lars Von Trier is a strange duck in the bite who is not averse to some experimental stuff, it was just a very long sit for me. Visually it is interesting in itself at times. Probably more for the spiritual poets among us.
