"I will take you places you've never been. I will show you things that you have never seen and I will see the life run out of you."

Ghost Story tells the story of four successful old men who have shared a dark secret for 50 years. When first the son of one of them dies under strange circumstances and then the man himself follows, it becomes clear to the others that the past cannot be left behind so easily... Based on the book by Peter Straub. According to Stephen King, one of the best ghost stories he has ever read.

The lead roles are played by veterans Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, John Houseman, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Additionally, Alice Krige and Craig Wasson also play a role.

Contrary to what you might expect from the title, it is not a haunted house film. However, the film does exude the atmosphere that such films possess. I thought the story itself was quite good, although it could perhaps have been developed a bit better. The backstory was pretty cool.

Visually, the film is excellently produced by special effects master Albert Whitlock (The Thing, Dracula 1979) with beautiful matte paintings and practical effects. At times, the film is particularly atmospheric and feels like a real Gothic haunted house movie.

Atmospheric and entertaining film with a mysterious story. A bit underrated.

Under review. Yes, definitely a horror film with Fred Astaire and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Made a huge impression in the early 80s, and was also probably one of the first horror films I ever saw.

I believe all those ghost stories by now, but this remains a nice movie. Even in 1981, this was a bit of an old-fashioned horror film, but that is precisely its charm.

A good film in which a number of old men regularly get together to tell stories. The beginning comes across as a bit messy, but ultimately it is a fine story that remains entertaining, partly due to the long flashbacks. Quite atmospheric overall, with perfectly fitting music as well. A rather special cast, featuring a few veterans for whom this was their last film. A narrow 3.5 stars.
