I have always had a soft spot for 70s British Horror. The House of Mortal Sin and Frightmare made me order the Comeback. I was never bored, the atmosphere, locations, camera shots and acting performances (especially Mrs.B) make this forgotten film a must for every genre lover.

Very British horror film in which a former teen idol returns to the UK to record his comeback album. Full of eccentric Brits and with only a few (but effective) gore scenes. We are mainly curious about what exactly is going on and the final denouement is extremely satisfying, an exception in the horror genre in that respect.

Nice introduction to the work of director Pete Walker.

Apparently the man had been forgotten for over 20 years, until a DVD box of five of his films was released in 2005. Incidentally, Pete Walker is still alive; he is a contemporary of Tobe Hooper, Wes Craven and other horror icons. But at 42 he had had enough of the film world and became a project developer. Who knows how big he could have become.

Then the film: very British in the sense of eccentric characters and neat dialogues. But in a broader sense, The Comeback is a typical example of 70s eurotrash, with strong giallo influences. Furthermore, the film is seen as a pre-slasher, although you can say that about many horror films from the 70s. Fans of eurotrash/giallo will certainly appreciate this film.

Film-wise I think it lags behind e.g. Italian contemporaries. The lighting could certainly be better, because everything is now very much in the spotlight. Could have been a bit more mysterious. But all in all an interesting discovery and I should definitely see more of Pete Walker. 3.5*
