Always nice, those stories where people are locked up in a house against their will. So is this one. Bad plot, but I still enjoyed it. There is suspense but I wouldn't call it horror.

Weird choice of 88 Films to include it in their Slasher Classics Collection. Not that the movie is bad. The choice of location is very cool and Steenburgen is also doing well, although I cannot say the same about Rubes and McDowall. Read more in my longer review:

Young actress Katie McGovern goes to the remote villa of film producer Dr. Joseph Lewis to record a demo. Arriving there and trapped by a snowstorm, she notices that something is not quite right.

Dead of Winter is a great Horror film. Mary Steenburgen (known from Back To The Future III) plays a good leading role and even handles the multiple roles she has to play at the same time very well. She also knows how to convey the intense scenes very well. I found Jan Rubes (Witness) to be quite theatrical and artificial in the dialogues, towards the end of the film he does a lot better I must say. Roddy McDowall (Planet of the Apes, Fright Night) also didn't really give his best acting performances, but he did play a very nice role.

The film is quite simple, yet powerfully shot. The long slow-motion shot and the very atmospheric house were also genius. The atmospheric setting, successful piano music and clever little tricks in the shots make the film a layered production. The story is not very special, and in the end it is not fully developed. But that's not particularly disturbing.

In short, a nice Canadian movie to watch. Misery I thought the concept was much better.
