Lean reprises his legendary, unsurpassable Brief Encounter. Her result stands up well to scrutiny, although predictably, it doesn't reach the level of its predecessor. For Lean, it's a fairly direct and simple film (he specialized in epics, preferably three hours long), with Venice as a believable and beautiful backdrop. The magic between Hepburn and Brazzi doesn't quite work here, which isn't due to the solid Brazzi, but rather to the somewhat poorly cast Hepburn. An intelligent woman who seems a bit too developed and controlled to fully convince us of the blind love implied here. The final scene is typical of the film: that train station scene is a nice touch, but in Summertime, it doesn't work as well as in Brief Encounter. It remains emotionally detached and not relatable enough, but perhaps that was the director's intention.

A good film about an American woman who vacations alone in Venice. An excellent first half, where the viewer plays tourist alongside Katherine Hepburn. A pleasant pace and beautiful shots of Venice. The second half is a more conventional romance drama, but still good.

Hepburn, who cheerfully claims to be independent upon arrival, but once alone in her hotel room, wallows in sadness at being alone (a trope we are no longer allowed to see in films these days).

Hepburn plays this role very well, some call it overacting but I don't really believe that, I think she put some of her real loneliness into this role.

Furthermore, the film is one big holiday advertising brochure for Venice, the location footage is beautifully shot, from the square to the canals and channels, it all looks wonderful.
