"He was given an offer he couldn't refuse..."

Machete (Danny Trejo) is a former member of the Mexican Federal Police who now roams the streets of Texas, beaten by drug lord Torrez (Steven Seagal). Reluctantly, he accepts an offer from spin doctor Benz (Jeff Fahey) to kill the corrupt Senator McLaughlin (Robert De Niro). Deceived and with the odds turned against him, he flees. Machete manages to make contact with Luz (Michelle Rodriguez), who as the head of 'the Network' has many connections and weapons. He also gets help from Padre (Cheech Marin), his 'holy' brother. Meanwhile, he is chased by Sartana (Jessica Alba), a sexy ICE cop who sees Machete as an opportunity to move up the ranks.

Sometimes I wonder why I like Robert Rodriguez's movies so much, and I always end up with this one, the action is over the top, for example the part where machete abseils with the gut of one of his pursuers to the floor below him , otherwise the film is very entertaining, good story, shot with camera work what I describe as "B-movie" (not in a bad sense, it fits this film), quite gory action scenes, in short: a great film that is wonderful to look at, 3.5*

Great movie to throw in after gaming on Wednesday night game night, so it seemed to us. Do we expect much from it? Nah. Did it fail? Yes, just a little bit. Does it matter? No, no ass.

Whoever says Machete is obviously talking about Robert Rodriguez, and whoever says Rodriguez thinks of Planet Terror and From Dusk Till Dawn. It should therefore come as no surprise that the entire cast of Machete appears in both other films. The story of Machete is simple, a hated cop who is accidentally chartered for a scapegoat mission only to go out of business. And don't let machete cooperate with that and turn out to be an opponent of stature. The slaughter that follows is grandiose, the main weapon not hard to guess.

Machete should be judged on one part and no more; and that is violence and bloodshed and as creative and as much as possible. This grindhouse product does not have much more. Certainly, the atmosphere is nice, the ladies beautiful, the cast large, the music sleazy...but otherwise the film is not entirely convincing in terms of dialogue and acting. Rodriguez has done this much better in PT and FDTD where the story is also technically convincing. Anyway, Danny Trejo as leading man, well, then the Oscars will remain a prospect and the content will not be so good in advance.

Machete is also extremely fine entertainment, provided that gross violence and over the top action are your thing, because Machete delivers. So nice for once.

Three years after his wife and child were murdered by Mexican cartel leader Torrez [Steven Seagal], the former Mexican federal agent nicknamed Machete [Danny Trejo] seeks revenge. Agent Rivera [Jessica Alba] tries to take out Torrez as well and decides to team up with Machete. Robert De Niro plays a populist senator (very reminiscent of a later presidential candidate), Cheech Marin a priest with an arsenal, Tom Savini a notorious hit man and Lindsay Lohan disguised as a nun. And that's not all! Insane pulp in which everyone, except the pleasantly stoic Trejo, ridicules their own image. You won't find much better campy action movies unless you can't stand over-the-top bloodshed.
