ARQ plot

In a future where corporations compete against sovereign nations for the last global energy supplies, young engineer Renton tries to rescue an experimental energy technology that could end the wars. The problem, however, is that the technology has created a time loop that keeps him reliving a deadly home burglary. He must find a way to stop the time loop and get out alive.

Try again?

I usually find films with the timeloop principle manageable and I am not tired of the concept at the moment. When I saw the plot description and trailer of ARQ I was immediately sold.

Although the makers with the concept immediately had my attention, this attention could not be kept well. This was because I found it difficult to sit through the entire runtime because the story was told so muddled. Also, the whole movie felt a bit too cheap as well. Much of the background story had to be visualized, obviously for budget reasons, and the finale felt a bit ant-climactic and unsatisfying.

This was because little by little I had already lost all my attention because the makers didn't manage to keep tension in it. What also didn't really contribute was that the acting wasn't very strong, especially by the enemy camp and that the story dragged on too much once the monkey was out of the sleeve.

Nice promise, this film, but unfortunately the mediocre and quite tension-free effect of ARQ has killed it. This is easily manageable for the genre lovers, but they too will probably not be able to suppress a number of yawning in the long run.

Time travel movies almost always have to do with a script that is not right or at least very illogical. The whole principle is therefore quite debatable. In this film it is kept a bit simpler by working with a 'time loop'. We keep seeing the same scenes with minor deviations as the characters become aware of the phenomenon.

There is not much development in this and unfortunately the characters do not learn from their mistakes. So it all seems pretty stupid.

Furthermore, the cast is mediocre and the characters are meaningless, while the mutual relationships play an important role.

Have seen many movies with this theme. And this still very low-budget in one location. It doesn't amount to much, but the trick still works nice and entertaining enough to see through the flat. Snack.
