Philo Vance's Secret Mission plot

"Secret murder... Sinister mission"

The publisher Martin Jamison wants to make an appointment with Philo Vance, because he wants to use him as an expert for crime stories, which he wants to publish. Jamison asks his secretary Mona Bannister to take Vance to his house in the evening. That evening Jamison also wants to discuss the murder of his business partner Sam Philips, which took place on his editorial board seven years ago, with Vance. Elizabeth, Sam Philips' ex-wife, now a receptionist at Jamison's publishing house, is alarmed when she learns of Jamison's appointment with Vance. As Mona and Vance pull into the driveway of Jamison's house, they hear two gunshots. Jamison's body is found that evening in the trunk of Vance's car.
