Pierre Richard in his beloved role of the naive young man who unknowingly stumbles into a crime story, struggles through it with a lot of luck and flair, and finally finds true love. He is amply supported on screen by a clique of actors (Blier, Rochefort, Carmet, Darc, etc.), regular fixtures in such French crime comedies of the time.

Innocent fun, usually funny.

Sometime in the 1970s, I saw this film and found it hilarious—perhaps compared to what you saw on Dutch TV back then, and the thick, Brussels sprout smell that filled it. Apparently, that was a relative matter, because now I find it rather dull; it elicited nothing more than a faint smile. Still, the film was quite successful at the time, and spawned a whole series of similar films starring Richard—even to this day. Fortunately (I suppose), most of them don't come out of the French-speaking world. Yet, apparently, there's still room for it, a loyal following of fans who continue to enjoy this kind of farce. The French answer to our Brussels sprout smell, so to speak.

This film isn't actually bad, even from today's perspective. If only because Jean Rochefort is in it, and what a powerful performance it is. And Mireille Darc's dress makes any film worth watching.
