Jour de Fête plot

As a joke, some residents of a small French village show the postman François, while he is drunk, a stunt film, saying it is a demonstration of the more efficient American mail delivery system. François doesn't realize it's a joke and the next day starts to adapt his own delivery techniques to those in the film.

Mixed-up film by Tati, which scores just a little enough because of the ending. One becomes acquainted with the local postman François, Jacques Tati himself, who is taken all the time by various villagers. François himself is a klutz and would not look out of place with Buurman and Buurman with all his ingenuity. After seeing an American stunt movie starring a postman, he gets inspired to deliver the mail more efficiently by bicycle!

At first, the film still hangs in chewed-up slapstick. I don't think running into rakes in every way was funny anymore even in the 1940s. But in the last half hour, Tati pulls out all the stops with his bike. We see a few funny finds and a single stunt. And there is still the misunderstanding between him and the villagers. Anyway, in retrospect I still thought this was an unpolished film, which had the potential to be much better.

The wonderful warmth of the French sun, of small-town life and of the well-meaning postman driving himself past, with more jokes, jokes and winks than I can count. The cowbell, the bag swinging around, how to get a cross-eyed man to knock the right peg into a plank (yes, that postman isn't that stupid, we can call it peasant smarts), laughing out loud when François suddenly falls into a well in a barnyard steps, a nocturnal drunken ride of an almost surreal serenity (although that's nothing compared to the lonely bicycle)... "Good news never comes too late!" The first full-length film by this unique talent is an instant masterpiece, and I've never had the idea that the film is slowly picking up steam: it's all about the small moments, and that at the beginning it is not entirely clear where the plot has to go is no problem for me. How to raise the flagpole is a separate two-reeler in itself, isn't it? And an extremely funny two-reeler moreover... except for François when he threatens to get that mast on his head and he then just steers his bike in the direction – well, I mean [i]enfin[/ i]...

Funny movie, but this one had to get going and especially the slapstick is really old-fashioned. Conversely, the atmosphere in that town is very well hit and that is really alive. Nice characters, nice running gags and the ending is quite okay. But the level that a Buster Keaton showed is nowhere even remotely reached. But certainly with the short length, great as a snack. 3.0*.
