Incredible. Disappointing. hallucinatory. On the one hand, of course, the content, the tragedy of boys who are unpreparedly thrown into a war that they do not wage for personal ideals, the powerlessness with which they commit genocide and are left individually behind with enormous feelings of guilt, the fear of death, but also the unreliability of the memory, the some imaginative outings, the illuminating anecdotal - oh, how balanced this film is! - etcetera etcetera, on the other hand the dynamics of the film, the musicality (both visual and auditory), the originality, the inventiveness, the wry and powerful idiom...

I could go on and on, but silence is the only way to really pay tribute to a superior art product like this. Yes, this is a man upside down.

To look. Point. Experienced! Exclamation mark!

(And now to Wikipedia, because the filmmakers don't really explain the entire historical dimension of the mass murder clearly. A conscious and defensible artistic choice - in the first place 'Waltz with Bashir' is therefore a human film , no politically charged criticism. Although that dimension is of course also included.)

4.5*

Afterwards I had to read up on the Lebanese-Israeli war from 1982 to fully absorb the film. Also the massacre in Sabra and Shatila in Beirut, committed by allies of Israel was unknown to me. Israel stood by and watched, and acted when it was already too late...

Strong animation film that was shot as a kind of documentary. Nice to bring this topic to the attention (again). In addition, a very strong starting point to view the event as a kind of trauma in which the soldiers who were there could barely remember anything of the events that took place. As if the trauma had been supplanted by a black blind spot. On the basis of interviews as in a documentary, the memory returns with fragments.

Visually also very strong. Raw and penetrating. The use of color is also intense with many shades of yellow and red, often referring to firefights, death and destruction. In any case, some strong scenes such as the parade in the palm grove or the shelling of the tanks ... The editing is also fine, with the violence of war interspersed with interviews. In this way, the puzzle pieces are always put in the right place and the event is unraveled.

The fact is that the powder keg that is the Middle East needs to be approached extremely complex and very nuanced. The truth is difficult to clarify and many wars and protagonists later it is clear that in this conflict there is hardly any striving for peace and harmony. This animated film once again confronts you with the facts, and they are not rosy. Good looking!

strong.

This animation film from Israeli land had been on my watch list for quite some time. I have seen this film several times on television, and what struck me at the time was that it had a 16+ rating. Then I never saw an adult animated movie come by, I've been watching the movie ever since.

The film actually feels like an animated documentary mixed with a bit of fiction. We follow a character who looks suspiciously like the director himself. A logical choice, given that the director himself was a soldier and experienced the images up close. So we see it through his eyes, but those who expect exclusively horror images will be disappointed. There is something more to this film.

The animation style looks good and the yellow glow that hangs over the film also works well. The figures themselves are a bit wooden that regularly take you out of the film, otherwise there are few criticisms to criticize the film. Besides some distracting images, it is a strong film that punches you in the stomach.

The story itself is also well put together. A bit of film is interspersed with real people talking, only they are animated. The images of hallucinations are overwhelming and the violence is sometimes portrayed harshly. However, the film is not particularly violent and only the very last images can be called really shocking.

A moving and compelling film that, unfortunately, is sometimes a bit distracting due to the way of animating. Furthermore, it remains a good anti-war film wrapped in a unique sauce that immediately distinguishes the film from other war films. It is not a pleasant one, but it is an important viewing experience that I would like to recommend to everyone.
