A story with, in my opinion, much more potential than has been used with this film. I couldn't care less as the movie progressed. Not bad, not strong. I think...

Fairly small but fascinating film that I started without any prior knowledge expecting to see a somewhat clichéd drama about victory against all odds, but I was, er, disappointed. Colin Firth is, as usual, perfect at portraying his character's humanity, thanks in part to his convincing physical transformation when, on top of the desperation over the poor condition of his boat, impending bankruptcy and subsequent decision to cheat , also the physical exhaustion and the delusions of the horses, the voices and the apparitions take their toll. Good work, but as a film, not so fascinating that I feel the need to see the documentary or the other feature film about this man. (By the way, don't look for that other feature film [simply called Crowhurst] on MovieMeter, as it's not here at the time of writing.)

This tragic true story, about solo sailor Donald Crowhurst who decides to participate in a non-stop solo sailing race around the world in 1968, comes out better in the documentary Deep Water, but nevertheless this is a reasonably successful film adaptation. Colin Firth is fine in the lead role and his perilous adventure has been portrayed by director James Marsh, albeit rather traditional and unspectacular.
