An elderly couple consisting of a demented former professor of English literature [Donald Sutherland] and his wife [Helen Mirren], who is also on medication, decide to take a long drive to Ernest Hemingway's house in a 1975 Winnebago. Sutherland and Mirren deliver - not entirely unexpectedly - excellent acting performances, but you can quickly guess how the film will end and then it will take an unnecessarily long time for that inevitable finale. Moreover, the screenplay is quickly repetitive and seems to want to stretch things as much as possible to get to feature length. Without the charm and chemistry between the two veterans, the film would not have been worth the effort.

Okay, the film is not very daring and it eventually gets a bit on repeat. But the humor and especially chemistry and acting between Mirren and Sutherland is very contagious. The actor who plays their son, on the other hand, was really incredibly bad and annoying. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed the film.

3.5*

A road movie for the enthusiast.

The story is told calmly and sometimes even stretches annoyingly long with repetitions of situations that add nothing more. It is therefore also a slow film and you have to love that. Not much happens and the drama remains subtle: no deep valleys and high peaks, but more like life itself. More subtlety. The problems of Alzheimer's are portrayed strikingly and realistically without being magnified. It is also not a heavy film: everything remains light and at the end you are not left with a heavy feeling. It does encourage reflection.

The acting performances are great: nice to see that beautiful films are still being made with old people in the leading role, such as Une Belle Course (Film, 2022 ) that I watched two days ago (another beautiful film with a strong acting woman over 90).

Actually, there are only two really dramatic moments in the film and they do make an impact and are well portrayed. It is also nice how American culture is brought into the limelight during the election period in which Trump came out as the winner. A little more could have been done in my opinion, then halfway through I wouldn't have thought 'how long is this going to take?' when slides from before were viewed for the 3rd time.

All in all a great film, but the slowness and especially the repetitions mean that I can't give more than 3 stars. Maybe I'm a bit too strict and I should add half an extra.
