Quite a nice film, especially because it is always a pleasure to see Dame Judi Dench act. Typically British, but with a touch of relaxed humor cast in a fine decoration at the end of the 19th century. As a viewer you imagine yourself in that period and all the splendor. Fazal is sympathetic but also no more than that and especially the supporting roles are well played. The film itself drags a bit towards the end and does nothing special, but works as a bit of pastime on a Sunday morning. 3.0*.

Good film about a remarkable and unusual friendship between the Queen of England and an Indian. The character of Queen Victoria is well developed, but how her new boyfriend feels about their friendship and commotion is a bit lacking. The first half is quite light-hearted and quite funny here and there. It is a pleasure to see Judi Dench at work here. Easily 3.5 stars for this piece of British royal history.

I was a bit apprehensive to see Victoria & Abdul because I had the prejudice of having to watch a boring bland costume drama. Nothing could be further from the truth. Now not that every movie viewer will be wild about this film, but who for example The Favorite (2018) of Lanthimos, The King's Speech (2010) or The Remains of the Day can appreciate , is also fine here. The true story was unknown to me, but apparently it was for everyone until 2010.

Not a masterpiece, certainly not, for that certain scenes come across as a bit forced. The family that had come over, for example, was worked out a bit too sloppily. Judi Dench does a fantastic job as Queen, a role that fits her perfectly and one that she has already gained experience with in [url=https://www.moviemeter.nl/film/4044]Mrs Brown (1997)[ /url]. Ali Fazal remains somewhat under the radar with regard to Dench, but that's no shame. The others also seemed a bit caricatured.

Surprisingly, the film looks quite nice with some nice funny moments where I could regularly conjure up a smile. The reaction of the Queen's family/court is on the one hand short-sighted, but at the same time fun to watch. The more the Queen upgrades her Munshi, the more her court doesn't know what wood to make arrows from. The cinematography, decoration and decor are also excellent. It's also nice to touch the loneliness, the obligations of her existence and the obsequiousness of her household. Good to have seen. Earned 3.5*!
