Beautiful drama in which a difficult beginning friendship between two women is central. Few surprises and certainly not sentimental. The story is told in peace and partly because of that the playing time is on the long side. Despite that, the film does not have a weak moment. The acting is also good and Mary McDonnell in particular can enjoy herself in her role.

Powerful character study of two damaged women, more or less condemned to each other by fate in swampy southern Louisiana. The one full of resentment and self-pity, the other somewhat exhausted but still strong-willed. Nice to see how these different personalities gradually grow together. A beautiful, personal film by John Sayles, which earned Mary McDonnell an Oscar nomination. Strange that Alfre Woodard was not nominated, because he is certainly not inferior to McDonnell.
