Always nice to see the debut film of one of your favorite directors. Some directors start off strong right away, some need to loosen up a bit and I personally think that Kurosawa falls under the latter category as far as I'm concerned.

Sugata Sanshiro is a bit unbalanced at times. Good moments alternate with lesser ones. The direction is certainly good, but the acting is a lot less, although it mainly concerns the smaller roles. The lead role is well portrayed by Susumu Fujita. The story about the battle between judo and jujitsu is not bad either. In addition, it is all atmospheric and the scenes, which take place in the open air, are worth watching.

All in all, it is certainly not a bad debut from Kurosawa. Many directors are already happy with a film like this, but Kurosawa has even shown that he can do much better than this.

3.0*

Like my predecessor Metalfist I watched this film via the transfer on the 4-DVD box Early Kurosawa containing six films from the period before Rashomon (1950) made. Judo saga is the only movie from it that I've seen before, but since that was about 40 years ago, this second viewing may in practice count as the first. And luckily it doesn't disappoint me either, because although the story is fairly simple (although the interventions of the censors cause quite a bit of confusion that a few screens with intertitles can't quite cover) it constantly holds the attention due to the combination of personal conflicts, physical fights and a spiritual approach. Moreover, the central character is played in an exemplary manner by an actor with a face like an open book in which unadulterated strength and great tenderness always seem to struggle for priority. The genesis of this début film is discussed quite extensively in Kurosawa's Something like an autobiography (in which he confesses, among other things, that he actually found the diabolical Higaki much more interesting), and that increases the pleasure of watching, but regardless of any prior knowledge, this is a great film with very nice visuals at the final battle.

Kurosawa's first, shot during the war. Somewhere separate. Although Casablanca was also released during the war, I feel that film is different, because Americans are right, Japanese are wrong. Anyway, those are my European glasses, for the Japanese it was of course different. It makes sense that movies just came out. Although I don't think I've ever seen a German film from the 40-45 period.

A nice film otherwise, reasonable pace (but the film should certainly not have lasted longer), occasionally visually nice ideas (if someone is crocheted then the image of the audience first and then the continuation of the crocheting) and reasonably acted . All a bit stiff and nowhere really excellent and the fight scenes look a bit clumsy at times. The final scene is beautiful with that wind and skies. 3.0*.
