Delicious.

That there are still such films being made, to start with. Nicely slow, and not really bothered by the too often excessive urge to show more spectacle. But with brilliantly beautiful images - of the landscape, and also of the lost life in the countryside. With the brothers carrying out their half-baked plan - not like Robin Hood's small-scale and idealistic, but just calculating and selfish. And of course absolutely brilliantly acted, and full of very funny situations and quotes.

Nothing to contribute really. And then comes the beautiful ending.

A neo-western that regularly looks back to the old westerns. Not nostalgic, but with a nod to a romanticized past. A cowboy with an Indian looking for bank robbers. The whole story would fit perfectly in a western. But it's set in the 21st century and know it.

I was shocked by the high score. The film starts off slow, taking its time to unfold the story and set up the characters. Great soundtrack too if you like Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds. Hell or high water is nowhere really special, but on the other hand it is made strong. Good acting that is just not over, simple but fascinating story and calmly presented without being boring. You also notice it in many scores here. Not the mass 5*, but regularly 3.5 and 4, so that the score is just as high.

Hell or High Water (an English proverb that loosely means "one who is determined to do something, no matter the difficulty") is a very beautiful modern neo-western, not so much carried by the plot (but which western?) rather because of the beautiful atmosphere, visual flair and a very strong acting cast. The appropriate (sad) soundtrack, and the music, in combination with the images of the desolate slums and vast prairie landscapes, awakens such an inexplicably beautiful feeling in me that only good films are capable of. The film is calm, contemplative, poetic. No clear judgments are forced upon the viewer; nobody here is the so-called bad- or good guy. Everyone has clear reasons and motives, and criticism of a society that increasingly abandons the poorer class is not lacking. As in the stories of the westerns of yesteryear, the law of the fittest held, well, it still is here. The film may lack a real climax, but the final scene between Toby and Officer Hamilton works well. Much is said by the things that remain unsaid.

And what a cast. Jeff Bridges in a "standard role" as sheriff, but he just plays really strong. Ben Foster also plays very well as the 'problem brother'. Strong actor, I also noted in 3:10 to Yuma. However, the star of the film is definitely Chris Pine. I've never seen him play a very strong role before, but he does it brilliantly here. He also plays the most difficult and interesting character; like his brother, there's darkness in him, but it's more repressed and not so much on the surface. Nice playing time of 90 minutes too; there is no long exhibition, everything you need to know you will find out during the film. Very nice experience, will review again in the future. Solid 4* for now.
