“What's the difference between wishing someone dead and actually doing something about it?”

Weak attempt at an intelligent thriller. In the end it is a game of who committed the murders of two women, but due to a lack of tension and logic, it quickly becomes a bland film.

The characters do the dumbest things and lesson 1 you learn in a police questioning, never lie about things that the police can easily check. Certainly not four times in a row like Walter (Wilson). Biel and Bennett are of course beautiful women, and in terms of atmosphere and cinematography, A Kind of Murder certainly scores points. And I thought Eddie Marsan acted convincingly, but unfortunately the cover his character makes at the end is ridiculous and laughable. Just like the ending unfortunately.

It seems like an intelligent story in which solving the murder case is fascinating, but this is completely negated in the ridiculously absurd chase scene at the end of the film. If you really dig into the story, there are a lot of illogical scenes in the film. For example, Kimmel's character g really goes off the rails at the end which is inconsistent with his earlier calm ice-cold approach to the situations. Walter Stackhouse's character is also very bizarre to say the least. Many lies to the police whereby he is increasingly labeled as the prime suspect. Also very strange actions by Walter that you as a viewer cannot get a grip on. In terms of atmosphere and acting it is okay, but the film loses its value due to numerous illogical actions and a ending that is a letdown. 5/10

A mysterious crime noir film that raises the necessary question marks.

The roles are well filled by Patrick Wilson and Jessica Biel. Both characters were previously seen together in The A-Team. Biel was pregnant with her first child during filming, and has been married to Justin Timberlake since October 12, 2012. In addition, we see Haley Bennett show off her musical talent during the song "I Can't Escape from You". Some of the filming took place at 7900 Rollingknolls Drive in Amberley, Ohio. The house was designed by New York architect Hugh Hardy. A large majority of the film was shot in New Richmond, Ohio. The script is based on a story by Patricia Highsmith. Her stories served as inspiration for great films such as The Talented Mr. Ripley, Carol, Strangers on a Train and The Two Faces of January. The story in this film takes place in 1960. This quickly becomes clear at the beginning with the premiere of BUtterfield 8.

The acting performances, the setting and the mysterious dark atmosphere set the tone in this film. The story is nicely constructed, and is able not to let your attention wander. Unfortunately, it completely falls apart in the last minutes. Some incoherent rubbish is collected together, and leaves the viewer with the necessary question marks. Quite a shame for a film with a promising start.

2.5 *
