“Now Sid, don't you blame the movies. Movies don't create psychos. Movies make psychos more creative!”
Scream continues to be great. The film doesn't take itself too seriously, and it's basically a parody of the old-fashioned slasher movies. Director Wes Craven injects a certain kind of black humor into the film, and despite some gruesome murder scenes, there's a lot to laugh about as well. The first part with Drew Barrymore actually houses everything that makes Scream so good. It is exciting and playful at the same time, with a wonderfully dark humor. The movie isn't exactly exciting, but the kills are performed with so much pleasure and fun that it doesn't really matter if you laugh rather than hide under the covers.
Neve Campbell is the ultimate scream queen for me, and here she shows why. She is powerful and resilient, but she also knows how to impress in the more emotional moments. David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Skeet Ulrich, Matthew Lillard and Jamie Kennedy, they're all on a roll, and they're really getting the "Scream vibe" right. It's pulp and the references to other horror classics are legion, but that makes it all the more fun. Scream itself can now also be called a classic.

The film is still a little special to me. The first time I saw the film when it came out in theaters I really enjoyed it. The following years with the follow-up films and especially when the periods around Halloween and Carnival are nice memories for me. Now 25 years later a rewatch, although I will have seen it a few times, although it has been a long time now. So time for a rewatch. Now I'm not really one that would really change the points on a rewatch. Remains fairly consistent with me in terms of points. This one also knows how to entertain despite you the concept and the punch line. I will also watch the follow-up films, together with my son, who is now also allowed to watch these films. Watching a few movies together during the horror challenge....great!!!

Scream was a huge hit in the late 90s. How could it be otherwise. The critically acclaimed horror director Craven would come up with another slasher. The fans were eager to see the film. It was quiet for years with this horror genre and with this film a new life was given. Soon, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Urban Legend" came into play. But nothing could compare to Scream. That 'ghostface' mask alone.
Literally and figuratively; what a 'killing' pace there is in this part. Craven barely lets you catch your breath or the next threat is there again. The movie starts with the classic opening scene - the pressure is relieved by the high school scene for a few minutes - then Ghostface heads for Sidney in her house. That's how it goes all the time. Of course Scream isn't scary (I think), but the threat is constantly there and that's great. It is also very nice that other horror films are mentioned in Scream. I was home watching television and uh...The Exorcist was on. It got me thinking of you.
The (long) final scene in the house is rock solid too! It would be a long evening in that 'horror house', because all kinds of things happen. Tatum's kill in the garage was the least. She could easily get out of that hatch (she wasn't that stuck if you looked closely), but hey, such a horrific kill is also part of it. It's also great that the youth are watching 'Halloween', how appropriate on an evening like this
Ja Craven made a party of it and the fans are eternally grateful to him for that. On to part 2 which I haven't seen in a long time.
