Hmm, this was a special experience this movie. A sometimes not always clear story, with ditto images. I didn't know the music, except Pinball Wizzard did ring a bell. There were some nice songs in it, but it wasn't always well performed. The film does have some surprising roles: Tina Turner, Jack Nicholson and Elton John all brought a song.

Well, it was the first time I saw this one, so it was all new. It might just be a musical that gets better once you've heard the songs a few times.

Nothing succeeds like excess. A relentless and merciless barrage of hallucinations, fake blood, explosions, visual effects, horrors and candy canes - it's not so much that the film constantly goes off the rails as that Russell and co. build its own road network without worrying about traffic rules or safety regulations (let alone logic). Surprisingly, Oliver Reed and the dazzling Ann-Margret hold their own very well in all the pseudo-anarchy, and because Roger Daltrey submits (seemingly) unflinchingly to whatever trials Russell and Towndhend could dream up, the film actually holds up pretty well. Ann-Margret occasionally echoes a bit too much à la Liza Minnelli, and the brilliant rock music of The Who cannot always be recognized in the musical soundtrack, but this film still does not get boring even after many viewings, otherwise there are always the many cameos. And how thin, muscular and acrobatic Daltrey is here... Those last minutes with only him still work.

The Who I have high. One of the essential British rock bands. Top singer, top musicians and iconic songs. I've known the album Tommy for about 20 years. Sounds good on record. The film, however, disappoints me. It still works on record, but when it is portrayed like this … mamma mia. One grotesque scene after another, from one incongruous extremity to the next, a story that bounces like a pinball… the creators should not be suspected of any subtlety. Toe curling up to and including it is. According to the credits, this was written by Ken Russell on the basis of the existing 'rock opera' ... apparently that had its limitations. It resembles the level of a play written by an eight-year-old with input from a drunk uncle.

My one and a half stars go to the few good songs and the guest appearances of Tina Turner and Elton John. I will certainly put the record on again, but I want to forget the film as soon as possible.
